Ever since Georges St-Pierre made his triumphant return to re-capture his UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 154, we've been hearing this one phrase thrown around ad nauseum. That phrase? "Superfight". That's because Anderson Silva was on hand at UFC 154 in Toronto to watch St-Pierre knock the rust off, and a lot of us believed that was some sort of foreshadowing. Of course, it wasn't, as Silva was in Toronto filming a movie, so he just attended the fight for the fun of it, but then UFC President Dana White said, "F*ck a bunch of that" and he swore to all of us that we were going to get a Silva and St-Pierre superfight in 2013.
In the meantime, we're being treated to another superfight in tonight's UFC 156 PPV event live from Las Vegas. In the main event, Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo is taking on Frankie Edgar in what many pundits and prognosticators are calling one hell of a matchup. Edgar, of course, has been one of the best lightweight fighters the UFC has ever seen, but back in August, after losing to Benson Henderson for a second time, he raised plenty of eyebrows when he declared that he'd be shedding some weight to drop down to the featherweight division. Thus, the superfight - a former UFC Lightweight Champion taking on the baddest Featherweight Champion of all-time.
Elsewhere, Alistair Overeem is making his return to UFC action now that his blood doesn't match that of a rhinoceros, and he'll be taking on Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, while 33-year old Rashad Evans will face off against 36-year old Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in a battle of the old farts (writes the chubby 33-year old). You can check out the rest of tonight's UFC 156 fight card after the jump, and as always you can check out our own Lobster Mobster's breakdown. Prelims start at 8 PM ET on FX and the big fights hit the PPV channels at 10 PM ET. Other than that, CHAT TIME.

Was there a football post here? If not, why?
Welp, at least we got a couple of upsets last night. I can’t believe how much of an egg Rashad laid last night. It’s the kind of egg I hope Flacco lays today. And Overeem? Oh my gawd. He should go back to Dutch land and stick to speed skating after that.
Well that was one of the least exciting events I had seen in a while
I didn’t even know this was going on here. I was so bored to death last night, I didn’t even bother looking. Whoops.
shit! I wasted my time in trying to get all the wrestling badges. and I forgot about the UFC badges!! I’m going to get them all!!!
I don’t know anything about the MMA ! I’m only here for the BADGES~
You got a lot of catching up to do.
Lucky for you, there seems to be a UFC event every weekend now. So you’ll get them pretty fast.

Not that fightmetric is the be all end all, but I find it interesting that they gave it to Aldo 49-46:
[blog.fightmetric.com]
Such a good night of fights, Im going to get drunk and piss on something in public. Night yall!
Well done, fam. Thanks for joining us, Danny.
Thanks for another great night of Punch Menz, folks!
49-46′s are a little weird. Thought Frankie definitely got 5th.
I have no problem with a 49-46. Frankie won the 4th. I can see an argument for 48-47 but 49-46 is fine.
Frankie won the 4th and 5th going away.
Iggins is correct
I think the judges got distracted by using the cage in the 5th. Flashy but not really effective
Chris Nelson on Sherdog gave Aldo the 5th.
Sherdog is full of dumbs
Sure, just pointing it out.
Aldo got two good shots in the fifth round, but Edgar got in way more offense.
Yeah, Frankie pushed the pace more in the 5th and got more shots in. Jose had some of the bigger ones, but Frankie did more.
I think pushing the pace is a bullshit argument for someone winning a round, btw. Just because you are moving forward doesn’t mean you’re doing anything effective. (I do think Frankie won the 5th, but not because he pushed the pace.)
Effective striking, grappling, aggression and octagon control. They’re the bottom two criteria, but they still count for something.
I know, which is dumb IMO. You can be just as, if not more, effective counter striking as you can pushing forward.
Yeah, which is why effective striking is first, it holds most weight.
@fte I should say that while Frankie controlled the pace, it worked because Aldo wasn’t answering back in the final round. Agree that the person always moving forward isn’t always winning the round.
But it doesn’t all the time. I’ve had plenty of arguments with people who think someone won a round because they “pushed the pace”, and I’ve seen judges score the way too. I don’t necessarily think those are in order of importance, in a lot of people’s minds.
@pancakes Yeah I got the gist of what you were saying. I was speaking more generally. It’s a pet peeve of mine lol.
Well, those people don’t know the rules, because this ([www.state.nj.us]) says the order is Striking, Grappling, Area Control and Aggressiveness.
Well I’m pretty sure we can agree that there’s plenty of times that it seems as if the judges in charge of scoring the fights don’t seem to know the rules.
Wait, I thought it was Striking, Grappling, Area Control and Aggressiveness… and how much Joe wanted his guy to win.
Frankie lost the fight, but won a lot of respect at With Leather tonight.
I always had respect for him as a fighter. He’s a bit overrated, but he’s tough as hell. He’s just a cry baby.
Aldo should just put his headphone on and bounce.
Those 49-46′s are fucked.
49-46 x2? All kinds of wow.
49-46 is kinda weird. So is anyone booing as if Aldo shouldn’t have won.
49-46?! Are these judges on crack?
Yes.
That scoring….wow
49-46? WHAT
As a child of the 90′s who totally didn’t *wink wink* have “the box” to watch every major 90′s boxing fight, at least they had the right guy winning. That’s all I ask. Have the right guy winning.
On an unrelated note, the UFC threads are for more enjoyable than the WWE threads.
Rematch plz.
No thanks. I’m sick of seeing Frankie get free rematches.
The guy puts on entertaining fights and asks questions of the judges like no one else. I’d take a rematch over another squash match.
Listen, he had an instant rematch against Penn. One against Maynard after a fucking draw. Then two straight losses to Bendo. And now a close loss to Aldo.
Fuck that shit. 3 losses in a row, all title fights. Get to the back of the fucking line.
A lot of guys put on entertaining fights? Unlimited title shots for them? He clearly lost this fight. If he has a problem with all these close decisions he’s in maybe he should finish someone.
That’s no happy accident. It’s not like he holds some kind of magic spell over the powers that be, he deserved every one of those rematches.
He didn’t deserve the Penn or Maynard rematches because he fucking lost those fights.
Lost those fights? He beat Penn twice in a row, drew with Maynard and beat him in the rubber match! Going by your logic, he shouldn’t have had to defend his title against Penn or Maynard, but he did and went on to win those rematches. With that in mind, after the Bendo fight it was understandable that he’d get a rematch, given his willingness to give all his previous opponents rematches.
He lost Penn 1, that was a robbery. And the first Maynard title fight should have been scored 10-7 in the 1st and Maynard should have won. Frankie’s been on the gift end of more decisions than he’s been screwed in.
That’s a reflection on the state of MMA judging and not on Edgar himself. He beat Penn and Maynard convincingly in their respective rematches, beyond that there’s not a lot else he could have done.
Okay, I’ll accept that, but then you have to accept that he’s lost his last 3 fights and thus should not get a 4th consecutive title fight.
I appreciate that angle, I just can’t see anyone else in the division pushing Aldo like Edgar did. Chad Mendes should probably be next in line on merit, but we all know how his last fight with Aldo went.
Think it’s 48-47 Aldo. I’ll take a round 6.
I don’t see how anyone scored the 3rd for Frankie, but crazier things have happened.
It was the butt kick. Score a butt kick, win the round.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone give the 3rd to Frankie.
Why? He turned it up for like 40 second but Aldo put it on him for the rest of the round.
Sucks that Frankie has to lose that fight.
N’er will I shit talk Frankie again.
48-47 Aldo, but Frankie is one tough motherfucker.
What a punch to end the round! 48-47 Aldo wins, but damn.
Round 5 felt 9-9 to me.
That’s impossible.
No chance.
Damn that last punch. 48-47 though.
I think Bigfoot spoiled me.
WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW, FRANKLIN EDGAR?
That is an ugly woman
can’t wait to see byrd’s score card!
just a drawing of dicks
She scores it 52-31 Garcia.
she’s making a MAD magazine fold-in picture
Eh, 39-37
Yeah, I think Frankie won round 4. 3 was close for Aldo.
Aldo needs to go nuts here and put this scorecard away.
If you are chanting USA I hate you
Someone that knows more about the actual technique than me. Does Aldo’s arm movement serve a purpose and does he waste a shit ton of energy doing it?
Verified
You do it bc it’s harder for your opponent to read you when you actually decide to punch. Also, it helps your punching speed. Newton’s first law and what have you.
That makes sense.
30-27
So I guess Fitch and Maia used up all the ground for this card.
I don’t know that Frankie can take Aldo down.
Frankie kicked him in the butt.
Yeah I thought so too. And Rogan lost his mind.
Holy fucking ouch. I have so much newfound respect for Edgar.
Frankie’s resilience is gonna get him killed.
Frankie Edgar has the Homer Simpson Skull.
That leg to the face. Good God.
frankie just went “pfft, so?”
Frankie can’t stand right on that front leg. He’s all kinds of fucked up.
Things are getting interesting. But this fight is seriously making my leg hurt.
Props to Frankie, I would be crying on the ground holding my leg at this point.
20-18 Junior
And Frankie’s got some fight in him.
aldo is coward to hit edgar’s legs instead of his head.
Maybe Frankie can move down again.
Uber Ken Flo
Holy fuck at those leg kicks.
They are making me cringe
Aldo’s leg kicks might be the best technique in MMA.
Belfort looks like he just showed up to happy hour and ordered 12 shots of Jager.
That was a pretty shitty start for Frankie
