If you weren’t aware, Billy Corgan (a musician who was probably pretty important to you if you were alive in 1992) runs a pro wrestling promotion. He calls it “Resistance Pro.” They mostly run shows out of Chicago. If you were in Philadelphia on National Pro Wrestling Day, you may remember Res Pro for the event’s lone overtly-awful match.
Anyway, here are three things Billy Corgan loves:
1. Alienating people who play music with him
2. Bad pro wrestling
3. Walter E. Smithe furniture
If we’re to assume that James Iha is off somewhere in the background sulking because he wasn’t invited to Billy Corgan’s Musical Chairs, those three things have come together (finally) in a local furniture commercial. It’s everything you’d expect from a local commercial about … whatever this is about.
It doesn’t make a lot of sense. I can accept that Corgan and the furniture dudes would be playing musical chairs, or that they’d be in a wrestling ring, but a game of musical chairs held inside a wrestling ring? That never ends well. It instantly ends in violence, and Corgan can apparently summon a gang of wrestlers to do his violent bidding. But then sweeeerve, Billy doesn’t want them to go so far as to break those nice chairs.
Ah well, it’s still better than Zeitgeist.

This reminds me of my favorite cheesy furniture crossover commercial which involved Dragonball Z characters firing energy blasts that turned into furniture accompanied by calming music. Only in Japan.
Walter E. Smithe has never been able to hang with the big boys in Chicago. And by big boys, I mean Eagle Man and the Empire Carpet Guy (RIP).
Don’t forget the awesome of Victory Auto Wreckers
ahhh the torture rack. reminds me of when I heard “Today” on the radio for the millionth time.
Zwan was unfairly slept on. Fact.
What about the reunion that was just him and Jimmy Chamberlain?
It is veering a bit into “Billy Corgan & Smashing Pumpkins” territory, isn’t it?. I wasn’t nutty about Zeitgeist, but I’ll defend the post-Chamberlin albums Teargarden by Kaleidyscope and Oceania with vim n vigour.
I’m with T-Bear on both Zwan and the “new Pumpkins” stuff, and Zeitgeist had three or four pretty good songs on it (Tarantula holds up).
I also saw the new Pumpkins in Philly and they played both Geek U.S.A. and Soma, which made me unspeakably happy.
And to be fair to Zeitgeist, the songs were perfectly cromulent, it was the vocal layering that sucked ass.
Your use of “cromulent” has embiggened the quality of my day, Keith.
What is it with carpet retailers and going-out-of-business sales?
There’s a carpet store a mile from my house that has been going out of business for the last 25 years.
This commercial is getting blasted online. I think it’s kinda cute.
This is basically the opposite of the R-Pro match at NPWD and I totally dig it.
My favorite Billy Corgan moment in wrestling was when Bret Hart said, “as for Diesel, despite all his rage, he’s still just a rat in a cage.”
And then Lawler was all like “hey, that’s Smashing Pumpkins!” followed by how his 12 year old girlfriend loves the Smashing Pumpkins.
