Gabrielle Ludwig is a 6-foot-8 50-year old playing junior college basketball for Mission College in Santa Clara, California. She was born as Robert Ludwig, and now lives her life as a woman. If you have just logged on to the Internet for the first time or have never met a person who is not exactly like you, you may find this shocking. What you may also find shocking is that three guys hosting a local sports talk radio show in Washington, DC, have maintained 1975′s asshole’s opinion of how transgendered people work, and would love to tell you about it.
The men featured in this clip are Steve Czaban, Andy Pollin and Chris Knoche. They do the asinine “he/she” thing for a while and believe “IT” is the politically correct term for a woman who used to be a man. They have a legitimate point about age limits in college sports and bring up the interesting question of how transgendered athletes should fit into sex-specific sports leagues, but it’s hard to pay attention to because they’re more interested in groaning and wanking to each other about how they want the gist of the story, because they aren’t going to read it. They say they believe that Gabrielle should have the same human rights as everyone else, but sports are different. You know why? Because transgendered people only deserve rights if Weenie and The Butt over at ESPN 980 don’t have to know about it.
One thing they suddenly know about: issuing public apologies to keep their jobs. This was ESPN 980′s statement:
We strongly believe two of our employees crossed the line when discussing a tanssexual person on their program last Thursday. Such intolerance and insensitivity will never be tolerated by this company. Due to the nature of their conversation, the pair have been temporarily removed from ESPN980′s Sports Reporter program.
ESPN wasn’t happy either, but they barely know ESPN 980 exists:
“The two are not employees of ESPN and made the comments on an affiliated radio station that controls its own local content. The offensive commentary goes completely against ESPN’s company culture and values. We have expressed our significant dissatisfaction to the station’s management.”
Here’s the simple answer, from the smallest soap box I can find: The correct pronoun to use when referring to Gabrielle Ludwig is “her.” She’s a woman. If you are a DNA scientist and want to expound upon the genetic differences between classically-defined “men” and “women,” fine, let’s do that, but do it in a respectful, intelligent way that shows folks you’re a grown-up in the current century. If you’re educated enough about sports to get a job talking about it on the radio, there’s a good chance you could become equally educated about human sexuality.
Or, you know, you could keep my grandpa’s weird opinions and superiority complexes forever. However you wanna do it.

You’re one of the good ones, Stroud.
Humans? I agree!
Thanks, friend.
Agreed.
If you’re educated enough about sports to get a job talking about it on the radio then you’re educated enough to tell mommy when you need to sit on the potty.
Maybe 1 in 500 sports talk radio personalities has the mental agility to see something from someone else’s perspective.
guh, i don’t want to listen to three jerk-baskets say awful shit, so I’ll just say as a person with “issues” that referring to people phenotypicallyl is the way to go.
The fact that the Phenotypicallyl is still recognized as a dinosaur and the Brontosaurus is not is one of science’s greatest travesties.
argh, typos, d’aww banana-rama!
(lol should of made a “greatest transvestites” joke lol)
I heard Neil deGrasse Tyson was behind the “brontosaurus” shenanigans.
BASTARD!! KNOW YOU NO BOUNDS, TYSON?!?!
Referring to gender reassignment as ‘quelling your inner demons’ and that if you do, you shouldn’t play sports, made me nope on out of that clip.
When people say reprehensible things like that, you are welcome to use the biggest soap box you can find.
But…isn’t that what it is? I mean one of my friends is trans and he (jesus that’s still weird to type in regards to this person) was constantly tortured by their gender. By committing to switching from she to he, they’re a lot happier and living a better life.
And the issue of trans people in gender separated sports (which is all sports) is a tough question and one that should be discussed.
It’s not necessarily what it is. Wanting to be the person you feel you are on the inside isn’t a “demon.” It’s being yourself. That’s the idea. You’re doing something positive, not rallying against something negative.
A statement like that, in this context, is literally meant to demonize and degrade. If someone has made the choice in their life then they can call it whatever the hell they want, because chances are they don’t think that making the choice to live with the freedom to be happy in the way they see fit is a thing for which people should be shamed and denigrated.
It is a valid talking point, but people who feel completely comfortable referring to a person as ‘it’ are probably people who should not be part of the decision making.
Maybe I’m reading “demon” in a different terms since I didn’t actually watch the video. I read it in that the demon is your gender struggle and the way that it makes you unhappy and affecting your life in a negative impact. Beating the demon would be reassigning your gender to the one that makes you happy.
Cool cool, I understand what you meant. But yeah…listening to almost three minutes of bigotry isn’t the best way to start your day, but comments on the audio clip will make a lot more sense! And then you can feel as horrible as the rest of us.
I won’t feel horrible because I don’t actually care about these two at all. I wouldn’t have even responded if I hadn’t read your post about demons.
Um…then I appreciate your comment on my comment about a thing you didn’t listen to, because issues like this should have more discourse than ‘lol internet memes’?
Pretty much.
The thing is, Steve Czaban is not educated about sports. He is almost always wrong about everything he says in regard to sports. For both of his shows (he has a nationally syndicated show on Yahoo Sports Radio and a local show the clip was pulled from) he needs a lot of help to get through the show. And just from a co-host, but from the producer and the guy who reads the updates. Also, Steve Czaban used to have a morning show on Fox Sports radio. I say used to, because he was replaced by Stephen A Smith. That should tell you all you need to know about Czaban’s command of sports.
ESPN 980 is known mostly for Tony Kornheiser’s local show, a show that might as well be national based on the numbers the (daily, delayed) podcast garners. (It is also not really a “sports” program, but that’s what makes it better than most sports radio.) I really, really hope he doesn’t shed light on this, though if he does I imagine it will be with way more tact than the above clip.
Yeah this is so obviously wrongheaded but at least everyone is shaming them. I haven’t seen much debate out there and that’s the only positive I can take from this.
Dipshits.
Czaban has a national show on Yahoo Sports Radio. It’s entertaining and I’ve never heard him say anything callous like this. Please, Internet, don’t get him fired.
this is yucky. I am not it.
Amen.
That segment begins with an audioclip that goes “It’s about to get all stupid up in here.” I couldn’t think of more accurate use for that intro.
Listen, if you people here want to discuss these issues in a civilized, rational tone devoid of childish stupidity, then you’re going to have to take it somewhere else. This is the internet, for God’s sake.
I get that, but the Internet is a much happier place when you remember there are people on the other side of it.
I have nothing of note to add besides my wish to Santa for all these turds to come down with Spina Bifida.
If she has eligibility left I say go for it.
A few years ago there was a controversy on the LPGA with a male to female trans-athelete, and IIRC any competitive advantage she had from her growth as a man was negated by the hormone therapy.
In Canadia, our sports talk radio shows air ESPN on the weekend. The amount of racist, misogynistic, homophobic and stupid shit that comes out of those hosts mouths is appalling. So, this doesn’t surprise me.
Out of curiosity, did Gabrielle Ludwig undergo hormonal treatment and get her penis inverted (I hope that’s the right word. Sorry if it’s not)? Cause if she did, I don’t see what the problem is. In Canada, that’s what legally qualifies you as a woman, if you were born a man. I assume it’s the same in the States?
Comment sections rule. In one entry Brandon says the internet is a happier place when we remember that there are people on the others side of it, and the very next person thinks two people who said something “wrong” should get spina bifada.
Czaban is, in fact, a tool. He’s a contrarian in a very total sense. He’s relentlessly negative and usually woefully unprepared to actually discuss anything related to sports outside of a cursory grasp on Redskins history.
Still… wishing him a crippling condition might be a little strong.
Props for the Weenie and The Butt reference
