Former “American Idol” contestant Lauren Alaina became the show’s latest singer to be shoe-horned into a NFL broadcast for the sake of synergy, as she sang the National Anthem before yesterday’s game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers. And as we have come to expect from today’s pop singers, she screwed it up.
Granted, Alaina didn’t complete botch it like some of the other derps we’ve seen in recent history, but she did pause and hesitate for a few seconds before finally remembering the words to the song that we all learned in elementary school. And much like today’s stars, Alaina took to Twitter to clear it all up.
“I am not a robot. I have no excuses. I messed up. You know, what can ya do. At Least didn’t fall down again.”
“Thank you everyone for the kind words. But the truth is I messed up. I’m gonna spend the rest of the day being thankful for all my blessings.”
A lot of people treat these moments as simple mistakes – hey, people forget sh*t, right? And I don’t know why I get so uppity when singers screw up our National Anthem, other than them screwing up the theme song of our country. But these people are pop singers and stars because they wanted the attention and they craved the celebrity, so if they’re not capable of doing a few test runs to clear away the jitters then the network should find someone who can. I know we’re not always going to get Super Bowl Whitney Houston in her prime, but I’m just tired of getting singers who are more like Whitney Houston now.
P.S. – She’s not brave because she recovered and finished the song. That’s just stupid.

I was particularly embarrassed that this disaster was broadcast to the soldiers. They expect and need better than that. Do you think this would be an acceptable rendition of the national anthem for the military? Of course not. Besides not knowing/remembering the lyrics, the singing itself was atrocious. No one ever expects weirdness or “originality” for the Star Spangled Banner. Voice was poor, phrasing was off the charts. Just a disappointment all the way around. I can hear the guys in Seoul now: “WHAT was THAT?”
The fucking football players practice before they go on the field, would it kill these fucking singers to do a damn run through, JUST ONCE, maybe 15 minutes before they go out?
*girl sings in locker room, flubs National Anthem*
“What, sstheriossthly, Lauren? My GAWD! Let ME ssthet you ssthraight!”
(I just assume she has a gay manager.)
So what? She made a mistake and then recovered to finish the song. It happens all the time even with practice. It’s not a big fucking deal.
I agree with NCassidy. She’s barely a professional, and I’m sure nerves just got the best of her. I’d probably F up the Pledge of Allegiance if the whole world was watching.
And don’t throw the soldiers into the mix that deserve and need better. F’ing up doesn’t make you less appreciative of their efforts. I doubt any of them are now thinking, “Well, I knew why we were here before, but now, it just doesn’t seem worth it…”
It’s okay, because her voice went oooOOOOOoooo during everything.
