Obviously the general news media is in an uproar over the happenings at Penn State University this week, as longtime head coach Joe Paterno will retire at the end of this season thanks to no other choice from the school’s Board of Trustees, because his former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky allegedly sexually abused children. It gets worse because these were kids that he was purportedly helping through his philanthropic endeavors, and it gets even worse because a witness reported encountering said sexual abuse at Penn State facilities.
The above image is a student gathering at Paterno’s house last night, as a hundred or so Nittany Lions fans showed up to support the embattled 84-year old. Many people have argued that they should have showed up to storm his castle gates, and I can understand the outrage. And that’s where our discussion is going to end today.

Being that this is primarily a sports humor blog, there aren’t really any jokes that I feel comfortable making about the sexual abuse of children. I also don’t feel like opening the doors to endless debates about why JoePa is a complete scumbag POS for knowingly allowing this behavior or why he still deserves to be loved and adored by the people and fans that appreciated the two national championships he won in 45 years because the police said that he did what he was legally obligated to do. Feel free to argue, though, I just don’t have much desire to stand on a soapbox and shake my fist in rage.
In the meantime, I had a once-in-a-lifetime sports collectible opportunity that I was going to recommend to our readers with deeper pockets, but unfortunately Sandusky’s 1986 National Championship ring has been removed from eBay. Presumably to be thrown into the fiery pits of Mordor.

Wow, how do these kids support a guy who most likely covered up child sexual abuse? Fucking idiots, I’m sure their attitude will change on these matters when they have their own kids.
@UU: F*cking college students. One, it’s group think, and if one person stood up in that crowd and yell “HE ALLOWED SANDUSKY TO CONTINUE TO MOLEST CHILDREN FOR 10 YEARS” he would be jumped. Two, if there’s one thing that bring teenagers/young adults together, it’s perceiving being the victim.
But yeah, fuck these students, fuck PSU, fuck Joe Pa and most of all, motherfuck Sandusky. I cannot wait for the news that he got shanked in the yard of a state prison.
In addition to knowingly covering up a child rapist who was under investigation in the early 2000′s, PSU administrators had the fucking stones to make this sicko a commencement speaker in 2007. It’s reported his speech was about protecting young children. Burn in hell.
I’d like to add in there are 10′s of thousands of kids at PSU, but only a hundred or so at JoePa’s house. 1 in every 500 college kids is bound to be a reckless retard who doesn’t give a shit about anyone or anything but getting drunk and beating Nebraska.
Thank you for covering this, Burnsy. I have no idea how to write about it without just typing WHAT THE FUCKKKKK over and over.
Between 1400-1500 students were on Paterno’s lawn according to some reports this morning. So on top of everything else, Paterno allowed these kids to further embarrass the school in front of the nation and the world.
Somewhere there is a young adult who kinda misses getting bon.. nope. Not going there.
The only way PSU comes out looking less stupid in this situation is to fire everyone involved immediately. Anything else will look like they put the victims at the bottom of the priority list.
Peeks into With Leather, sees Penn St post, backs away slowly.
/McQueary’d
I thought standing on their “damn lawn” was the best way of getting even with old geezers???
I DON’T KNOW HOW TO MAKE THIS FUNNY DAMMIT!
Aren’t there even any transgressive and ironic PSU engineering students that could have manufactured some potato cannons loaded with Werther’s Originals?
Now that it has been revealed that Paterno knew about these transgressions, it’s time to pull the plug on Penn State football.
Nice unconngary.
McQueery deserves a special ceremony for his induction in the “Chicken Shit Gutless Reactions” Hall of Shame.
Why is it time to pull the plug on PSU football? The players had nothing to do with this. I realize that supporting Paterno may be stupid to some people, but so are some of the things said on the internet about this. The team did nothing wrong. Adrian Amos is a freshman. Pretty sure he didn’t fuck any little kids. Let’s not take it out on him.
Also, Paterno informed Curley and Schultz, who served as the head of the campus police at the time. How is that not informing the police? Really seems like everyone is more hateful towards Paterno than the guy who was actually raping little kids. If Curley and Schultz had done the right thing, Paterno would be viewed as a hero. It’s very easy to say what should have been done knowing the facts now, but people need to really look at this with a level head, even though it’s something so terrible that it’s hard to not get upset over, PSU alum or not.
And I’m not so sure people would feel differently if they had their own children. It’s not the best decision in the world to let your kids sleep at a random man’s home.
WHO KNOWS WHERE THAT RING HAS BEEN DAMMIT
/sorry Id give up a year of eligibility to transfer out of PSU after this.
In 1998, District Attorney Ray Gricar declined to press charges against longtime Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky following allegations of sexual abuse. Hes dead now.
I am not going to try and defend what Joe Paterno did (or did not do in this case), but one element that upsets me as a PSU alum is the idea that people are defending Paterno because he “won 2 championships and a lot of games.” Paterno was incredibly involved in the community at Penn State, donated enough money to double the size of the library, and set high academic standards for his athletes.
If this was just a matter of a football coach in disgrace, I doubt there would be very many students outside his house supporting him. A lot of this support comes from the fact that his involvement with State College was far more far reaching and influential than coming up with plays at Beaver stadium.
The Nazis were really good at sports too. They should be forgiven for their transgressions.
If only Bernie Madoff’s accountants were better football coaches.
The rings that story could tell are both defamatory in nature and subject to a grand jury appearance.
/shows self out
//appreciates common sense approach to awful story
@ajaman The only reason I could see why the FB would be scrapped was because:
1.) Start from scratch. Mostly, if not everybody on the coaching staff is somehow connected to PSU. That includes playing for JoePa (see: Sandusky), playing for Sandusky (see: Athletic Dir), and etc. It’s an extended family.
2.) How many more people knew about 2002, or worse, 1998? So not only are members of football coaching involved, now campus police are tainted. And with The Second Mile, many of their Board Members were part of the program, and they were made aware of Sandusky’s 1998 investigation. And lets not forget in 02, when he has banned from campus w/ children,
the whispers started. Ask why Alumni slowly stopped going to The annual Second Mile Golf tourney after ’02?
3.) McQueary.. I don’t even know where to begin. As a 28 yr old GA, he witnessed anal raping of a 10 yr old boy in the teams locker room, told JoePa who told AD, not a LE officer. Then McQueary gets promoted in 2002? And sees Sandusky at an ’07 practice w/ a boy.
4.) Current players are innocent, unless they worked w/ Sandusky at The Second Mile, then no one is getting subpoenaed. The problem is with the coaching staff, it would completely need to be overhauled. But it’s the actual cover-up: the football program was put above the safety of at-risk (hence no parents) kids. JoePa may have run a tight ship (except those 40+ convictions that attributed to admins asking JoePa to resign, he said ‘no’), and dealt w/ arrests and rape allegations harshly. This is a different animal. Players could be dismissed, especially for tarnishing the brand. And that is what caused this mess. No one, not a star WR, or an accusation of a DC showering w/ young boys could hurt the brand, PSU football.
/gets off soap box
//apologizes, father went to Sandusky’s football camps and family is still in shock.
I don’t think the team should be disbanded since that only hurts the innocent players that had nothing to do with this. But they should forfeit Saturday’s game and consider forfeiting the rest of their games. The remaining two games are on the road and it is going to be UGLY. The Big Ten needs to protect its image or else there will be a circus and should consider cancelling the games if PSU doesn’t forfeit.
The Big Ten should definitely take Paterno’s name off the damn championship trophy and should probably ban PSU from a bowl berth. As a Big Ten alum, I don’t want their bowl money distributed to my school.
Next fall, PSU should hire a coach who has absolutely NO ties to Penn State, have a completely new coaching staff, and start completely fresh.
Well, now it’s Paterno, the AD and the President. I think this is a great opportunity to really have some fun and put some Occupy protesters in charge.
Loose Anus lips sink Championships.
And to think, a week ago it would have seemed absurd to equate Penn State with child rape. And yet….
If I walked in on that, I would have caved sanduskys skull in before he had a chance to pull out.
@The Sports Machine: I agree that there’s a chance the games could ugly on the road, but I’m hoping fans of other teams, as well as their players, think with a level head and realize fans are supporting a team that was just as surprised as everyone else. Well, you know, except the five or six guys we know were involved. Including the janitor that no one is mad at even though he saw Sandusky performing oral sex on a child.
@Tebow’s Roomie: It is scary to think about how many people knew and didn’t come forward. Even though this is a humorous sports blog, I’m not afraid to sound like a pussy and say honestly that it is heartbreaking how many people failed these poor kids. However, I would put the biggest failing on some who are not even being mentioned in the media, even though the media has the same ability to click on a .pdf as I do and read the Grand Jury presentment. In 98, Sandusky admitted to one of the mothers, with a detective present, that he showered with one of the boys and bear-hugged him and the detective and DA didn’t see fit to press charges. In my mind, that’s why it’s so confusing to crucify everyone at Penn State–if the police didn’t stop it, how could someone else?
One other true confusion I have is what happened when McQueary saw that shit happening? It goes from he saw it to he told his father. Well what the hell did he do when he saw it happening? Did he beat the shit out of him? Did he wink and walk away? I want to slam the guy, but it doesn’t seem right if I come across a picture where Sandusky has two black eyes and multiple fractures. There are some questions that no one is asking, and sadly Penn State isn’t helping the situation by staying so tight-lipped about it.
And yes, I’m a PSU alum if you couldn’t have guessed. Ha.
I sure am glad that during my undergrad years @ Penn State President Graham Spanier spent so much time and effort combating the scourge of underage drinking. Time well spent…
@The Sports Machine – Michigan or Ohio State? That’s the only reason I can see for you wanting PSU to forfeit/cancel the rest of their games, considering they’re 8-1 and on track to compete in the inaugural Big 10 Championship game. Those players had absolutely NOTHING to do with this scandal, so why should they be punished?
And, for those interested, before any of this broke, there was news that Urban Meyer was real estate shopping in Boalsburg (just outside State College) last week and that Paterno was going to be asked/forced to retire at the end of this season anyway.
Burnsy’s the go to guy for news on Jerry Sandusky’s penis?
Good to know.
I really hope whoever they get to replace Joe is someone who holds his team to same standard. Urban Meyer is a good coach but the U of Florida football graduation rate is 20% lower than ours. Penn State worshipped Joe because he raised genuine student athletes, I think most alum would agree, especially after this controversy, we would rather have a clean team with less wins than a dirty championship team.
ajaman – I’m not so much concerned about the players, but I think it will be ugly having JoePa sitting in that press box with fans right below him.
Carson Palmer’s RE – Go Bucks.

Christ theyre rioting at Penn State..!!! Wait. David Stern? What? Really ESPN?
/watches British anchor on CNN.
@ajaman Totally agree w/ unanswered questions. Being a LAX player for a decent team in DII, our football team ran shit, coach replaced AD as opposed to the associate AD. From what I know about the insular football culture of PSU, it’s like envisioning my school x100. Mind boggling. I don’t think for one minute JoePa ever had a “superior”, just in ceremony. He knew went on w/ his problem players, no doubt he knew abt JS. And that’s where Shit. Will. Get. Real.
I’m dreading how bad this will get, and the number of victims & perpetrators that will increase. I thought the Colorado PK Rape Scandal was the worst it could get (barring a team running a back alley abortion clinic). Some students don’t get it. “There’s a B1G title to win!” “Who’ll coach on Saturday?!?” “He’s an icon!” Which is understandable, due process, etc. They just are too involved to see that their hero is flawed, b/c of a choice that snowballed.
Buckle up. When the Feds start snooping around, I wouldn’t put it passed NCAA Pres Fuckface to initiate some unbalanced punishment.
/fuck, fall 2010 was so much more fun
//dick joke?
@Ajaman- Are you familiar with the story surrounding Ray Gricar, the District Attorney in Centre County in 1998? [www.pennlive.com]
Not any solid evidence to back me but IMHO he was pressured by PSU not to pursue the matter (I could be totally FOS though).
@Nimby: I am aware of him going missing. In some articles, it says that people think he may have been afraid to prosecute him, but in other articles, people who knew Gricar, are saying that that just simply was not who he was. So, who knows? We’ll never know. Unless he resurfaces. It’s really an odd thing surrounding the beginnings of all of this.
