The third-ranked men’s basketball program at Brigham Young University has dismissed its third-leading scorer from the team after he admitted to having sex with his girlfriend. The school confirmed that sophomore Brandon Davies will sit out the rest of the year–while he watches his team’s potential one-seed in the national tournament slip away–and could be kicked out of school entirely.
Much is being made of the fact that Davies has not been charged with a crime, which is totally beside the point when we’re talking about Mormons.
A source told The Tribune that Davies is “extremely remorseful, heartbroken” but has accepted the punishment doled out by the school.
Wednesday afternoon, the school confirmed that Davies’ dismissal was not due to something that is criminal in nature, but would not acknowledge the specific portion of the honor code that he violated, per school policy.
Among other things, the honor code forbids students from engaging in premarital sex, and admonishes them to “live a chaste and virtuous life.”
BYU’s honor code, conceived by the Mormons’ Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is pretty explicit: don’t drink, don’t do drugs (that includes caffeine), don’t lie, don’t break the law, don’t skip church, don’t dress like a d:ckhead, don’t bring guns to campus…
And don’t have sex. But it used to be worse; before 1981, students couldn’t even wear jeans. This is not a school where any sane 18-year-old American would want to play college basketball.
Here’s a pro tip: if you want to have sex with girls in college, don’t go to a college where you can’t have sex with girls. Whether you agree with the policy or not is irrelevant; BYU’s honor code couldn’t be easier to understand, and unlike a lot of honor codes at other schools [coughcoughwestpointcough], they actually enforce theirs. If Davies agreed to live his life by the BYU standard, and he failed to meet that standard, what exactly is unfair about him being disciplined for it?

(Of course, if it turns out that Davies is catching hell for simply having a white girlfriend, forget everything I just said.)
BYU is the Emilio Estevez of colleges.
BYU employees are also held to that honor code. I know a guy who turned down a sweet job there because of it.
I can empathize, but not sympathize, as I went to a university (not BYU) with a similar Code of Conduct. It always irritated me when people bitched about it, because really? It’s not like they sprung it on us. It’s drilled into your head 24/7 from the time your application was accepted.
Fun Fact: The University of Florida’s Honor Code includes “Do not use a dead girl’s credit card, but if you do, whatevs.”
It’s also imporant to understand that the whole code is based on the honor system. You can do whatever you want and lie about complying with the code. So he voluntarily admitted this stuff to someone. Unless he got busted sneaking her out of a dorm room or something, or got caught in flagrante delicto. BYU, hard as it is to imagine, is not a repressive, police-state environment. The kids go there because they WANT to live by that honor code. Now, athlete who are there to play ball and don’t buy into the lifestyle? It would totally suck to be them. But it ain’t like they didn’t know the deal beforehand.
Caffeine is not included in the honor code. Coffee and tea are hot drinks, which are prohibited. You can still have caffeine though.
So wait. Hot drinks are not allowed at BYU? WTF is that about?
That’s a valid point Eddie, but isn’t America all about making a commitment and then backing out of it? (See: cards, credit; marriage)
Seems like Nazi Germany….
We decided to kick Jimmer Fredette off the team because he had relations with a can of coke….not Caffeine free.
Doesn’t he know that you go to vegas for the weekend, get married, pump those cheeks, get divorced then return to school?
everybody knows that.
nothing unfair about some reasonable discipline. You know, like make the punishment fit the crime. So I’m benching him for the first 30 seconds of the next non-conference game. Sounds about right to me.
“So he voluntarily admitted this stuff to someone. ”
From I have heard, she is preggers. I mean, he is shooting 53% from the field.
If he pulled out, what’s the big deal?
Ok I’m scared that the guy 2 above me who named himself “The Sports Machine” used the term “preggers”….are you a girl in your 20′s sir? Anyways I use that word too so I can’t judge. Anyways I find this whole situation terrible. Its none of our business what happened between Davies and his girlfriend. Its really between them and God. While I think getting kicked off the team is absolutely unfair and over dramatic, he knew this code before signing his letter of intent and he knew what the consequences may be if he broke this code. I’m just very curious how BYU found out…its kind of creepy do they have cameras? I hope we see Brandon Davies play again at another school that has no code!
I forgot to add this while BYU thinks they’re bringing people to the Lord in actuality they’re chasing people away. They obviously don’t follow what Jesus said: “Judge Not Yet Thee Be Judged”
Didn’t the morman leader have underage wives in polygamy? And consequently go to jail after being on the run? Some honor code in religion huh? But let’s blame the black boy for sexin his white girl. Hypocrites kill me.
Dee, do you have google? Jump on it and do some research before you post. There are different groups that call themselves “mormons.” The mormons that own BYU are the original mormons and they do not practice polygamy. Second, when I read this story, the color of Davies or his girlfriend never crossed my mind. Real racism is all the fools that think people are out to get them because they are one color or another. On a final note, the real hipocracy belongs to those that are calling out BYU. Did he or did he not sign his name stating he would adhere to a standard? BYU is enforcing the standard with the same consquence they always have. Do you actualy think BYU doesn’t want him to play? Every person enforcing BYU’s standard was on the BYU basketball fan list. A standard not enforced isn’t realy a standard. This is clearly anything but hypocracy.
I am glad at least one other person who commented it willing to point out the obvious, this probably has to do with race. As soon as I read this story I looked up who is his girlfriend/fiancee and she is white.
“Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so.”
