Awesome story coming out of the Meadowlands: the New York Jets are still looking for a replacement for Jim Leonhard, their gritty defensive back that was placed on IR three days ago. They put a call out to Kevin Fitzhugh, a safety that spent part 2009 on the Jets practice squad and was in their training camp this summer. Fitzhugh, looking at a chance to start for a playoff-contending team, said thanks but no thanks.
“I told them I’m very thankful for the opportunity,” Fitzhugh said. “But right now, being that it would be for just a couple weeks, I feel that I’d rather stay with a secure company and job, somewhere I know I could have long-term employment.”[..]
“Being unemployed is not a good feeling,” Fitzhugh said. “It’s a lonely feeling. I’d rather be somewhere safe and have a great foundation.”
–NJ Star-Ledger. Thanks, Ben, for the heads-up.
Fitzhugh shot down a chance to follow his dream to keep his job as a conductor for the Norfolk Southern railroad. Good for him. I’d rather see him support his family than get back into football and then 20 years later testify to Congress about how he’s unable to support his family. These guys have a choice when it comes to putting their bodies on the line, and it’s refreshing to finally see a guy realize that. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m late for my shift as a sex slave at the gay bar downtown. Yeah, it’s degrading, but the tips are great. When they wash them.

What he really meant to say is “And risk having my hand bit off trying to beat Rex Ryan to the post game spread? NO THANKS!!!!!”
You know damn well that this decision of train-riding over football has PK all sorts of conflicted.
RIGHT ON! Finally somebody is thinking about taking care of there family before putting them self first. there should be more people like you.
I heard he said “I’d rather be the Patriots waterboy”.
Well lets see. The minimium salary for an NFL player is $325,000. If he was there for four games that would be $20,312.50 per game or $81,250.00. Does his present job pay that kind of money? I think I might have checked with my boss to see if perhaps I could have taken a leave of absence if I had a chance to ‘live my dream’. Just saying…
Richard, how do you know he didn’t?
A train Conductor job With Norfolk/Southern (Largest and most financially sound railroad in the world!) is harder to get than a job in the NFL. And, as time passes, the pay over twenty years will substantially surpass that of a five year career in the NFL. I truly feel this was a wise decision,…and he will not be in any pain.
Excellent move! I’d do the same thing! Where are the guarantees, especially with ryan who is a two face liar like his father! Hell get about 80 grand for the last 4 games plus maybe another 250 grand if the go to and WIN the SB all before taxes! 10 years from now, he’ll be much better off staying where he is! If he injures himself he won’t be worth anything to anyone! He’ll be living on workmans comp which is no great party! His family will suffer and all he’ll have is again the Workmans comp and some memories of 4 games with the Jets! Alot more than what alot of college football players dream of but still not worth it!
What happened to the good old days when taking care of your family meant taking every single dime before signing a multimillion dollar contract?
