Former Mississippi State player and servant to the Queen of England, John Bond, has made allegations that Auburn University quarterback and Heisman Trophy frontrunner Cam “Isaac” Newton expressed interest in transferring to MSU from junior college last year, but Newton was expecting $180,000 for his services, according to another former MSU football player. That may seem excessive, seeing as he only wanted a laptop while playing for the University of Florida, but hey, a guy’s gotta make some cheddar, right?

ESPN.com reported that the former player who was soliciting money on behalf of Newton was Kenny Rogers, who apparently also has some bad blood with the NCAA and the NFL Players Association. Rogers allegedly acts as an agent for college players like Newton, who was looking to transfer back to a D-I school after spending time at a junior college in the wake of his ejection from Florida. Through his Elite Football Preparation agency, Rogers reportedly tried to sell Newton as a collegiate free agent to various schools, with some willing to pay as much as $200,000. However, MSU could only shake $180,000 out of the couch cushions, and Cam was allegedly cool with that because he was close with MSU coach Dan Mullen from their brief time together at Florida. He’s the quarterback hooker with the heart of gold.

“During the 2009 football season, I was contacted by a former football teammate, who represented to me that he was speaking for the Newton camp,” Bond said in a statement given to the AP through his attorney. “He told me that Cam Newton wanted to play at Mississippi State, but that a specified payment would have to be made.

“I reported the conversation to the Mississippi State Athletic Department,” Bond said. “I was told by the Athletic Department that Mississippi State would not respond to the overture that was made to me, and that Mississippi State would continue to recruit Cam Newton as it does any other football recruit.” (Via WKRG News)

And of course Auburn and MSU officials all deny any wrongdoings in the recruitment of Newton, and no other schools have been named, as far as those who offered up $200K for Newton’s badassery. Auburn Coach Gene Chizik, who once said that coaching at the University of Central Florida was his dream job (we love you, Gene!), said that the No. 2 Tigers did nothing wrong in recruiting Newton out of junior college and there’s nothing more to this story. Meanwhile, Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer spun around in his chair and cackled maniacally.

In fairness to Newton, Bond and Rogers played for MSU in the early 80s and were teammates in 1982 and 1983, when Starkville, Mississippi was a hot bed of cocaine-fueled orgies and Hollywood rock star parties, so they’re probably just looking for attention. Hey, who just made that fart noise?
