Moss played in Minneapolis for the first seven years of his NFL career before being traded to the Oakland Raiders in 2005. Rumors of the trade began swirling last night when ESPN’s Bill Simmons misfired a DM tweet that went public.

The Patriots will receive a 2011 third-round draft pick in exchange for the seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, who started his NFL career with the Vikings in 1998. Had New England allowed Moss to leave in free agency next offseason, it would have received a third-round selection in the 2012 draft as compensation.

Moss, who’s in the final year of his current contract, is scheduled to make $6.4 million in base salary this season. He wants a new deal, but he wouldn’t receive one from the Vikings as part of the trade, Lombardi reported. via.

A third-rounder? That’s the best they could get for the guy? And secondly, I’m surprised that Moss did not get a new deal from the Vikings. Those contract talks between Moss and Minnesota were reportedly the only thing holding up the trade. I’m just stunned (and somewhat annoyed) to see Moss’s price set so low.

But now Randy can go someplace where he’s more appreciated, the Vikings finally have a qualified replacement option for Brett Favre and New England can bask in the glare of its all-Caucasian receiving corps. It’s a win-win-win, really.
