I’m not big on “FJM-ing” other columnists; those people are entitled to their opinions and the points of view that they wish to represent in their work. But I about sh*t a brick when I read Dan Wetzel’s take on why Boise State suddenly turned into college football’s New York Yankees.
Fast forward five seasons and Boise State is bigger, better and suddenly no longer so popular. In some circles, they’ve become the most hated – or at least rooted against – team in America. Move over Notre Dame.
Boise State? Hated more than Notre Dame?! Are you sh*tting me?
As the 2010 season kicks off this week however, fans of teams from major conferences, especially ones with realistic championship chances, increasingly see Boise as something other than a plucky underdog. The Broncos are a team that, based on a favorable schedule, may have found an inside, and potentially unworthy, route to win a national title.
Wrong wrong wrong. Way to gloss over the fact that NOBODY WILL PUT BOISE STATE ON THEIR SCHEDULE. Everyone understands this. Everyone but Dan Wetzel, apparently.
Yet if you want to complain about the fortuitous spot the Broncos have put themselves in, don’t direct the venom at coach Chris Petersen’s program.
Really? You mean in the way that you just tried to direct it there?
Try shouting at the major conference commissioners who run the BCS and continue to cling to a system that may blow up in their face.
Because they’re the greatest of listeners. Look, just read the whole thing. It sort of devolves into the typical “Wah wah I hate the BCS” type of column. Yeah, we get it. You hate the BCS. You want a playoff, and while many of us share that sentiment, nobody wants to hear it incessantly. Boise State has to be considered one of the country’s elite football programs. Just because they’re not in the BCS Club doesn’t make their opportunity (or their path) to a national championship any less valid. Most of us understand that. Dan Wetzel should start.

Agreed. How can anyone hate Boise State? They built that program out of nothing. They’re tons of fun to watch and the whole country is afraid of them.
Kudos to Tech for opening up against them at FedEx. I’m going to get extra blacked out in the parking lot to spite Dan.
Agree with Wetzel completely. He didn’t say their weak schedule was their fault like Punte is quick to jump to the conclusion. And yes, most people I talk to DO HATE THEM because of their easy schedule. Their fault or not, the fact remains they don’t play anybody.
I have to plead Bateman on this one.. they’re not terribly important to me.
No one hates anything or anyone more than Notre Dame. And if they do, they should be forced to hang about their bullshit campus for a day or two, and then be asked again. Or just set on fire. Samesies.
Maybe it’s an east coast thing, but I’m in Seattle and I can’t think of a person I know who hates Notre Dame. Gotta save that hate for USC and, yes, Boise State. And BYU if you have some spare time.
“Boise State has to be considered one of the country’s elite football programs.”
They do? Why? Even if you think they’re the best team in the country this year, I don’t know how that equates to being and elite PROGRAM. By that logic every one-hit-wonder ‘has to be’ considered a rock legend.
Excuse me Mister Wetzel but all my hatred is directed towards Jim Tressel, I simply cannot spare any for Boise State.
“The Broncos are a team that, based on a favorable schedule, may have found an inside, and potentially unworthy, route to win a national title”
It more than makes up for the fact that they just got finished plowing through one of the tougher slates anyone faced in 2009 (including another non-BCS contender in TCU). And the fact that dozens of major programs refuse to play them.
I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t cheer for Boise State unless Boise is playing their team. Boise beefs up their schedule as much as they can, play their existing conference schedule (about to be upgraded in a very underrated MWC) with no room for error, and continually proves in nearly every big time matchup in bowl season that they aren’t the recipients of lucky scheduling, but rather a team that will beat a major conference team with regularity.
If Boise State Played In The SEC
Boise is hateable, because they do everything right, they don’t over achieve they just execute the plays the way they were supposed, the players don’t mouth off, they just show up and win
Boise State is the San Antonio Spurs of college football
Boise lost ANY and right to complain about teams from auto-bid conferences not scheduling them when they dropped their biggest rivalry game, against Idaho.
Boise’s campus is an effing glorified junior college. The university president is a pompous douche, and the players mouth off plenty – it just doesn’t make the press because they’re in friggin’ Idaho.
