For the first time ever, Michael Jordan will be appearing on the cover of a SPORTS video game. Even after appearing on Wheaties boxes and in Gatorade commercials, Jordan never suited up in PlayStationLand. That may soon be changing.
In addition to acting as cover model for “NBA 2K11,” the speculation is that Jordan will also be digitized into a playable character. This means gamers will become the virtual MJ in hopes of reliving some of his trademark moments.
There’s more. I’ve even heard whispers that 2K has been in negotiations with several players (both teammates and opponents) from the Jordan era to appear in “2K11″ to help gamers and history buffs accurately recreate the heated competition between the classic Bulls and rivals like the Celtics, Knicks and Cavaliers. But since 2K needs to ink all former players to individual contracts, it’s still up in the air whom the company will be able to sign in time to appear in the game. –ESPN, via SLAM.
There’s no reason to make more of this than it is–there aren’t many stars in the NBA currently (if any) that have the transcendent appeal that Jordan still maintains. People still want to be like Mike more than they want to be like Chris Bosh. I only wonder if Jordan will be able to wear mom jeans on the court and have a H-O-R-S-E rating of 40. That sounds about right for some reason.

guy lafleur: #1 dad, calm down its a video game, and jordan is a living legend no one is trying to make him the face of the nba, you clearly do not respect the history of the game. and last time I checked, there arent many retired sports stars who just “go away” Do you even watch sports? I’m guessing your more into sex and the city 2 then the nba playoffs. hopefully they will come out with a new barbie game so you can stop bitching and play that game
Will this be the Jordan version from his first two careers in the NBA or his third one in which he wasnt actaully bad but where he wasnt “Jordan” anymore but some slower old dude that used to be good but whose body wasnt responding as well?
Using Jordan as the face of the game now has more to do with his ego and branding possibilities than anything else.
Any numbnut who wasnt planning on buying this game but who will because of the cover boy is the target for this.
Like all retired sports stars, he should just go away and leave the limelight to others.
The NBA is about the players… NOW…. not from 20-40 years ago.
Bring out Bill Russell all you want like they do nowadays, thats great. But dont give us Bill Russell as the face of the NBA.
