After this raid of the house of a prominent blogger and this new Arizona immigration law, I really thought that American virtue was dying. And then last night I saw that the Phillies backed up the Brinks truck to Ryan Howard’s doorstep. And all seemed right with the world, at least for a little while.
There’s a lot of room to argue about this 5-year, $125 million extension of his current deal, which makes the Phillies infielder the second-highest paid player in baseball. Does Howard bring that much relative value to his team? Did the Phillies overspend on his power at the plate (25 homers, 141 RBI in 2009)? Who cares…I’m just happy that someone out there can still beat the system, still get an absurd amount of money for working hard at honing his craft. That just feels right to me.
I hear moaning about the absence of a salary cap in baseball all the time, as if it would magically tear asunder the Yankee empire and force the Marlins to spend more on player payroll than they do on their electric bill. Lost in these cries for “fairness” among teams is the concept of fairness toward the players. Ryan Howard is the best baseball player that hasn’t banged Madonna. He should be paid accordingly.

So you’re saying Albert Pujols, Chase Utley, Mark Teixeira, and a whole bunch of other players have banged Madonna? Howard is far from the second-best player in the game. Hell, he’s not even the best player on his team, as has been widely pointed out in the aftermath of this deal.
45 Homers* plus a host of “fastest player to x Homeruns”
$25 MIL a year? The Phillies must have forgotten about his awesome 3 RBI and 0.174 BA from last year’s W.S.
As a Phillies fan, I have nothing to add except I’m thrilled that Lobster Corgi has made its way to WithLeather and used in a post featuring Howard, no less.
Contract to which he celebrated with a strike out swinging last night….yeah
That’s 25 million Subway footlong Chipotle Steak n Cheeses.
If he takes a swing at Lobster Dog, his contract is void.
So bloggers are journalists now?
I’ve spent years saying Howard was underrated…but not this underrated.
I’ve spent years saying Howard was overrated… but not this overrated.
Upstate Underdog says…$25 MIL a year? The Phillies must have forgotten about his awesome 3 RBI and 0.174 BA from last year’s W.S
And he was paid accordingly for it. Players don’t get a salary for the post season.
Anyhow, Ryans swing is way to long and he has way to many holes to pay that kind of money. As he gets older his production will go down unless he shortens his swing.
