WEST VIRGINIA-PITT GETS BRAWL-Y
02.04.10The “Backyard Brawl,” the moniker given for the rivalry between Pittsburgh and West Virginia, took an unpleasant turn last night. After a late second-half comeback by Pittsburgh in their game against West Virginia, some fan in the Mountaineer crowd threw something toward the Pitt bench, launching a bizarre sequence of events and technical fouls that eventually led to West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, in a delightful fit of irony, lecturing the crowd on their behavior.
Huggins grabbed a microphone and addressed the fans a short time after objects were thrown on the court with 12:08 left, telling the crowd, “don’t throw anything on the floor. That’s stupid.”
As the crowd applauded him, Huggins then asked if someone did it again, “point him out so we can throw him out of here.”
It’s just part of the legacy of the Mecca of the burning couch.
West Virginia’s students were sent several e-mails by a university official in recent weeks over their behavior at games. They were asked to tone down their language after profanities were heard on national TV in a Jan. 23 win over Ohio State. Against Louisville last Saturday, fans chanted the name of a woman that Cardinals coach Rick Pitino admitted having sex with outside his marriage. –Y! Sports.
The object turned out to be a coin that hit a Pittsburgh assistant coach in the face. West Virginia was assessed a technical foul as a result. Huggins had a DUI charge in 2004 that eventually led to his dismissal at Cincinnati, so it’s hilarious to me to see him lecturing others on how to behave in public. That said, the beatnik that mistook the basketball court for a water fountain at the mall has no business being anywhere in public. We’re in a recession, yo. Keep that money in your pocket and pass the savings onto yourself.

Bobby, would it kill ya to buy a friggin suit?
Mrs Parker, he tried, and failed.

Nothing will ever top Sam Wyche’s plea to Bengals fans to stop throwing shit on the field.
“YOU DON’T LIVE IN CLEVELAND, YOU LIVE IN CINCINNATI!”.
Lord UU, that had slipped my mind.
more importantly, who is the announcer in the second clip who flips the fuck out?
Seriously? You need to chime in about his DUI? Do you live life with perfect morals? And I think you have your facts a bit incorrect. The thrown object did not launch the bizarre events. The scuffle for the ball between McGee and Flowers, and the ensuing Ref jumping in, and then taking down McGee is what launched the sequence of events. Yes, there was a dumb fan that decided to throw an object (haven’t heard if its confirmed to be a coin), and it hit the Pitt coach. Thats shameful that even occurred. Yet, the object was not launch from the Student section, so its hard to know if it was even a student that threw it. Or even a WVU fan. Seriously, its all an assumption at this point it was a WVU fan. WVU was having a good run up at that time, so why throw something, if not out of frustration. That being said, students did throw out a cup and tshirt onto the court when Pitt closed up the point margin. Thats what caused Huggins to come out. But I guess you can’t win with people. I read blogs criticizing Huggins for not saying something to the student section on previous occasions. Now he comes out, and he gets criticized for doing so, based on having a DUI in his past. You bloggers are a mess of personalities and a mishmash of one-sided opinions. You’re achieving “lawyer” status when it comes to your usefulness and value to a better society.
Huggins had to yell at the crowd after the first instance, a disputed charging call. That’s when fans threw stuff on the court but didn’t hit the coach. Later in the game after the scuffle the object hit the Pitt coach. Just to clarify, they had been told by Huggy Bear once and did it a second time, resulting in a T.
It’s obvious the coin wasn’t tossed from the WVU student section,I think the quarter was tossed by a disappointed Pitt fan…I think he was saying as long as Pitt has been playing like chumps, here’s the chump change. Yeah, your coach dresses very nicely, he’ll fit right in when he and the panthers roll into in New York for the NIT.
