Look, I get that a lot of you are pissed about how NBC is choosing to cover the Vancouver Olympics with this jagged, misinforming one-size-fits-all coverage that’s designed to appeal to everyone except the people that actually want to watch the Games. But how valuable is it to you for me to just rail endlessly on a network that nobody likes anyway? Very little. But when speed skater Sven Kramer of the Nederlands does it, it’s awesome, as evidenced when he was asked for his name and nationality right after he won a fugging gold medal.

The video after the jump shows Sven recounting the event with a Dutch journalist. Mmmm, Dutch. Not only are they pretty and unable to speak English, but they also pay their own way. Oh, they do speak English. Eh, two out of three works.

Bronze medal winner Bode Miller is awesome. He’s the most accomplished American skier ever. As an added bonus the guy loves to party and crush white girls. All activities I condone. Sure, NBC (who spent a billion dollars to help underwrite the whole event) is trying to distill five hours of daily programming out of thousands of hours of tape, and five seconds of his time would really help the guys in production, but why should he put up with such an affront?

Being Dutch I feel ashamed of the stupidity Kramer showed in the NBC-interview, not to mention the stupidity the Dutch reporter showed in her commentary, pampering Kramer. Kramer may have won a Gold medal; he still has a long way to go when it comes to communication skills. This guy still has to learn there is more in this world than ‘Sven Kramer’. Arrogance, yes, Dutch arrogance: I’d hope not.

Okay, so the reporter isn’t an expert in his sport but Sven could have easily taken the high road by acting like a decent human being, being polite, and using this opportunity to introduce more fans to his sport and to himself. Instead he shows the world that he is arrogant and expects the world to know who he is and to cater to him. Further he shows that he has an anti-American bias later in his comments to the press in 3 of his interviews. In the end karma bites him in the ass and he is disqualified for something he blames on his coach when he should take personal responsibility for knowing where he should be on the track and making sure he gets it right even if it means ignoring his coach. That’s karma Sven, learn some manners.
