COLTS HAD PROBLEMS WITH PROTECTION
02.11.10It took four days for Indianapolis Colts GM Bill Polian to absolve Peyton Manning for what was essentially a game-ending interception in Sunday’s Super Bowl, and his remarks were eerily similar to Manning’s own “problems with protection” quip after the team’s 2005 playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“Our offensive line, by our standards, did not have a good game,” Polian said of Sunday’s performance. “They were outplayed by the Saints’ defensive line.”
So the Colts O-line–who were largely responsible for 99 yards rushing on 19 carries and didn’t allow a sack–was outplayed?
“… There were certain situations throughout the game where we didn’t execute — most notably, the failure to get the first down and run the clock out at the end of the first half after a magnificent goal-line stand and then, of course, the failure to handle the onside kick,” Polian said. “We had four things we could have done positively on that play. We didn’t do any of them. That absolutely changed the game. It went from our getting the ball on their 40-yard line to having them march down for a touchdown. Then, our inability to punch it in from first-and-goal on the 3. Those situations, we did not execute.” –NFL.com
So the Colts’ loss had nothing to do with the fact that Peyton Manning was driving down the field with a chance to tie the game…and didn’t tie the game? That was just a big footnote on the evening as a whole? Sure, Peyton threw a pick, but really the room service at the hotel that night was even worse! Just chill, Bill. At least you have that undefeated regular season to fall back on…Oh, right…

Douche.

This just keeps getting better and better. Next these idiot fat humps are going say that the onside kick was a dirty play! Oh wait..
I wish Colts fans didn’t have problems with protection.
Obviously the pick was the nail in the coffin, but assuming the Colts do score, aren’t the Saints probably going to march down the field anyway? The Saints didn’t punt after the first quarter. Is a tired D at the end of the game going to make the stop? Maybe, but unlikely.
What an asshole. Of course it can’t be his fault for assembling this team of chokers, right?
The pic is very clever and funny!
Absolutely not, Enrico. Polian has NEVER assembled a team of chokers before.
st notably, the failure to get the first down and run the clock out at the end of the first half after a magnificent goal-line stand
Maybe they weren’t used to a team with Peyton Manning trying to run the clock out at the end of the first half with just a 4 point lead against a potent offense since, you know, every other time they went for the jugular and marched down the field for a score with the most deadly 2-minute offense in the league.
Nah, it was the O-line’s fault, not the coaching strategy.
People seem to forget they had a new coach this season and were about take Tom Moore out of the picture as coordinator? If not for Payton’s talent level I guarantee they wouldn’t have made to the Super Bowl. This would have been a “rebuilding year” after losing to the Chargers AGAIN in 2008 in the Wild Card round no less. Had they played San Diego in the championship they probably would’ve lost too. But SD are chokers in their own right. Norv Turner can’t steer a unstoppable team built by another choke just like Jim Caldwell probably won’t be able to steer a Dungy built team.
The window for success though is running out in Indy. Manning won’t stay in the NFL for 19 years like Favre. They won’t make much of a splash next year since Super Bowl losers have had a track record of missing the playoffs in the past 10 years, the sole exception being Arizona. And with a lockout looming in 2011, Manning would be entering his 16th and possibly final year if they don’t give him a true extension in September 2012. So its either do or die next year minus the cap!
*Maybe* the reason they got 99 yards on 19 rushes was because NO spent much of the game in a 3-3-5 defense.
“They won’t make much of a splash next year since Super Bowl losers have had a track record of missing the playoffs in the past 10 years, the sole exception being Arizona.”
This is the dumbest thing I have read all day.
