PETER GAMMONS LEAVING ESPN
12.08.09
I wasn’t the one that said, “For what sports site will Peter Gammons lob softball questions at A-Rod now?” But I wish I was. Yeah, so Peter Gammons, who seemingly has been part of ESPN’s baseball coverage since its inception, has announced that he will be leaving that network after baseball concludes its winter meetings.
“My decision to leave ESPN and move on at this point in my life has been conflicted. I owe a great deal of my professional life to ESPN, having spent more than half of my 40 years in journalism working for the network, and the choice to move on was made with nothing but the strongest feelings for the people with whom I worked. ESPN gave me a great deal more than I gave it, and will always be a huge part of who I am.” –Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
For my money, there’s never been a more overrated analyst in any sport, and it baffles me how people can absolutely rip analysts in other sports and then blindly step up to the church of St. Peter and take in whatever gospel he was spewing at the time. Just because he didn’t talk about his kids all day doesn’t make him anything special. Nobody knows if Gammons will go on to work for another network, or just sit on his front porch all day and bitch about rap music.

And there goes the last Red Sox fan who was employed…

He was an analyst that offered actual insight, cared about getting his facts right, was often right on the money with predictions, and wasn’t a fucking moron like most of the analysts. Reading Gammons in the Globe three Sundays every month in the summer when I was growing up is half the reason I’m as big a baseball fan as I am.
Seriously, Steve Phillips and John Kruk are on TV every night (during the season) giving their opinions and you’re complaining about Peter Gammons.
If you stop and think about it, sports analysis, except for a handful of guys, is utter bullshit. I’ll take 200 grand a year to say that a team needs to play defense and not turn the ball over to have a chance. Aside from cool stats (which analysts have nothing to do with) it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to say anything original. That said, to me Gammons was one of the few who had interesting things to say. He didn’t just make it to the Hall of Fame by accident.
It’s Howard Hesseman’s evil twin.
He’s just leaving before his sex scandal goes public.
@EP
No, unfortunately Simmons still draws a paycheck.
Just because he didn’t talk about his kids all day doesn’t make him anything special.
Hey, it’s a low hurdle, but one that trips up most analysts. In comparison to Peter King, Gammons is Jesus.
Even though I hate the Red Sox (not as much as the cock smoking Yankees), Gammons’ book ‘Beyond the Sixth Game’, was actually a pretty good read.
