We’re now in the phase of the MLB season where the leagues glacially roll out their post-season awards; and we were moderately tickled to see Kansas City Royals ace and object of female WL readers’ affection Zack Greinke scoop up the AL Cy Young Award after one of the best seasons in baseball history. Greinke finished the season with 229-1/3 innings pitched, a 2.12 ERA and a pant-droppingly low 1.07 WHIP.
Greinke’s struggles with anxiety disorder are a part of his life and cost him most of two big-league seasons. But his poised brilliance on the mound conceals a young man who still isn’t terribly comfortable with all the recognition his talent has brought him. “He didn’t even answer the Cy Young call because he did not recognize the number on his cell phone,” the Kansas City Star’s Joe Posnanski writes. –The Daily Fix [Wall Street Journal]
Of course the nerds are rejoicing, as they feared that Greinke would lose the award to one of the six players that finished the season with more wins. They pointed to a stat called Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP), but really that sounds like a bunch of hogwash. Why use a bunch of statistics for such a thing when there are plenty of unbiased sportswriters at your disposal? Those guys are really knowledgeable and certainly would weigh each player’s performance equally. Especially when Greinke goes to play for the Yankees in 2011.

Greinke has also won the hot girlfriend lottery. Sorry, Mrs. P.
I thought you had to pitch for a MLB team to win MLB awards.
This isnt a surprise, in his High School yearbook he was voted most likely to handle balls.
I should have added this link.

I dare not saying anything bad about Zach in fear of what Ms. Parker would do to me. But I will say this, my boy KING FELIX GOT ROBBED!!! Only two 1st place votes? The sports writers of america can get fucked.
Maybe this will keep him from killing himself!
“The sports writers of america can get fucked.”
No. They cant.
Not even with roofies, floories or groundies. Or rapies.
I mean, have you ever SEEN Jason Whitlock? He’s a black hole of googley eyed fatness.
Felix didn’t get robbed. He deserved 2nd place and got it. Considering everyone should’ve given their 1st place vote to Greinke, I think Felix did pretty well for himself.
UU, his girl IS hot…its like a dream threesome waiting to happen!!
I gotta say yesterday was a very happy day in the Mrs. P house, thanks for the post Punte :)
Let’s see, Felix had 3 more wins(tied for MLB lead), 3 fewer losses and more innings pitched than Greinke. He was 1st in quality starts, 1st in win percentage and 1st in BAA…those stats deserve better than 7% of the 1st place votes. Greinke wasn’t dominant enough to get all the first place votes. But it’s a moot point regardless, Felix will be King in 2010.
Amen biggieland here is what I’ve found from a Venezuelan blogger, they are pissed about this decision [notilogia.com]
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not argueing against the fact that Greinke won nor am I saying he didn’t deserve it. But Felix Hernendez had far too good of a season to get only 2 first place votes. More people should’ve seen deserving of the award…but I guess he isn’t corn fed and white enough…there I said it(completely ignoring the fact that a central american has won the AL award 6 of the last 11 times).
I don’t understand. If you think Greinke should have won the award, then how can you argue with other people voting him 1st?
Felix will be King in 2010…in Boston.
I just can say WTG Felix
I personally would’ve voted for Felix, maybe I’m biased but I felt he had the better season. I would’ve thought more people, especially on the west coast, would’ve seen it that way too. Only two 1st place votes seemed like a slight to a pitcher that argueable had a more complete season than Greinke. Even last year when Cliff Lee went 22-3, dominating the whole season, Halladay still got 4 1st place votes. The voting just seemed to onesided for my taste. Ok, I’m done. Fuck the Yankees, yada yada yada (that’s yiddish for faggots, faggots, faggots)
