11.11.09 MODERN WARFARE 2: THE AIRPORT SCENE
We realize that this is the second post for the latest Call of Duty video game in as many days, but I’ve just read a spoiler report in the game that about blew my damn mind. So much so that I’m jumping the post for the benefit of those who haven’t played it yet, or just don’t want to hear about it. But there is video.
There’s a scene in the game that’s getting a lot of controversial press, and I’ll explain why. The scene, referred to as “No Russian” or simply “The Airport Scene” takes place in Zakhaev International Airport in Moscow. As I understand it, you’re undercover with a handful of Russian mercenaries who walk toward the security checkpoint in an airport with scores of people waiting in line…and basically shoot everyone in sight. Here’s video of that sequence in the game, and to say that it’s pretty graphic might be the understatement of the year. The insanity begins at the 1:50 mark.
“No Russian” makes the coffee scene from “Grand Theft Auto” look like a Saturday morning cartoon. And even people that aren’t outraged over it are wondering if the scene is “immoral,” you know, compared to being a Russian terrorist and just bombing stuff from afar.
War is a filthy, violent business in which all notion of morality must be suspended if victory is to be certain. Games and films that depict war should be no less brutal.
In my gaming life I have dropped a nuclear bomb on Korea, led a squadron of bombers over the Rhineland and even destroyed a huge ring-shaped future world with millions of inhabitants. The games in question were all rated 15 and excited no great national debate. Because the killing of non-combatants in these games was all at arm’s length it was seen as more acceptable. –Michael Moran, Times Online (UK).
This is where I would make some grand statement about how censorship is bad and that all the mothers that might be trying to get this game banned need to lighten up. But really, these games are so popular because they seem so damn real. As we recognize people that fought in actual wars for America today, I’m somewhat bothered that games this might be the closest thing that we’ll ever get to what our veterans endured. And I want to know what that’s like. I want to appreciate what they went through, and sometimes gratuitous Xbox violence is the closest that we can get. Should society be curbing the ugliness of a game like this…should a society created by people that have had to endure that sort of ugliness turn such a blind eye? I don’t know. But I think it merits a discussion, and hopefully we can put the controllers down at some point and have one.

So, today’s the day I turn into my father. Awesome.
Graphic violence is fine by me. Gunning down civilians at airport security is just fucked up.
“But they’re Russians! It’s not like they’re real people!”
I know we’re all supposed to be about teh funny here, but this:
“War is a filthy, violent business in which all notion of morality must be suspended if victory is to be certain.”
Is in direct conflict with over two hundred years of international law. (Although we basically threw it all out the window already when we adopted torture as an official policy). Anyway, if he’s right, then Western civilization has basically taken itself all the way back to the Dark Ages.
If we don’t mow down innocent people, the terrorists win.
/I think Dick Cheney said that
WOW. Speaking as someone who’s accidentally killed civilians before — and the mountains of grief and guilt that stem from that, even though I was found to be not at fault — this is just… not right. It doesn’t depict the “modern warfare” of any professional military man I’ve ever met.
Your comments (”they seem so damn real”, “I want to know what that’s like”) make me think of David Wong’s Ultimate War Simulation: http://www.cracked.com/article_15660_ultimate-war-simulation-game.html
In Russia, game videos you.
I want to appreciate what they went through, and sometimes gratuitous Xbox violence is the closest that we can get.
What a load of crap, Punte. Have you ever wanted to cower in dread or shit your pants in fear while playing a video game? THAT is what ultimately makes war so traumatic. No video game that doesn’t put your actual life in jeopardy while you play can ever come close to simulating that experience.
Yyyyyyeah. I think what we have here is a Murder Simulator.
Aren’t games supposed to be fun? You know, like games? I’m not saying we all should be playing Pengo (which is badass in its own right) but I think this one crosses the line.
But I’m not so concerned about what the programmers put into this game. I’m concerned about the not-so-few amongst “hardcore” gamers who will actually enjoy mowing down civilians up close and calmly strolling through the carnage with a grin. I want to know exactly who they are so they can be rounded up and sterilized without anesthetic.
I think one has to realize the context of the mission. You are undercover for the CIA in a Russian terrorist organization. You are warned before the beginning of the mission that it may be disturbing and you have the option to skip it if you so choose.
I don’t have a problem with it being in there. It’s not much different than it being in movies or TV.
Personally, when I played through it. I didn’t fire a shot. It was a bit graphic, and so I went along, appreciated it for what it was (a depiction of the inhumanity of terrorism/killing innocents), and didn’t choose to pull the trigger against any civilians.
Just to be fair, you are playing the role of a deep-cover CIA operative, and you get off’ed at the end of the mission - so the USA gets blamed for the massacre, and providing a means of moving the story along.
It certainly doesn’t glorify killing civilians - in fact, it serves to show how evil the bad-ass terrorist boss is…
Dang, Artic16 beat me to it. Yes, as he says, you can just follow along as a spectator and observe the inhumanity. It’s a plot vehicle, nothing more. A cut scene would have accomplished the same thing, but you get experience a more visceral reaction by “being there.”

I didn’t say it was close. I said it was the closest we could get. Next time, trying actually reading the quote that you excerpt from my post.
With all due respect to Matt, who is the only one here who can really say anything, is this really a big fucking deal? In GTA you can stealthily knife a grannny in the neck. I fail to see how this is at all different. People rallied against censorship in droves when GTA came out, how in the hell is this different?
I think I know I’m still human when watching this video makes me squirm.
I read the whole thing the first time, I just read it again now, and I still think what you wrote was horseshit. My point is that without the fear of knowing you could lose your life, it’s nowhere “as close as we can get.” You’d get a better simulation of actual combat by getting mugged at knifepoint in Central Park than you would by playing a war simulation video game - because in the video game, nothing can hurt you.
That is, of course, unless machine malfunctions and the holograms become real. Last time that happened I got slapped with three paternity suits.
You are warned before the beginning of the mission that it may be disturbing and you have the option to skip it if you so choose.
Well then, we have nothing to worry about. Only the psychopaths who might actually act on this shit will role-play it then.
Fuck, I sound like Joe Lieberman. I’m heading to a strip club.
Although I am not offended by this and think it does serve a purpose in the game…
I think its funny we went from a game with two bars and a ball bouncing back and fourth to shooting up an airport full of civilians
Yeah, definitely glad I didnt choose the “I’m a vagina (and/or little kid)” selection at the beginning. Nothing smooths over work rage like running down injured virtual people & stabbing them with authority.
By the way I’m taking bets: How long do you think before Uwe Boll turns this level into a movie?

I’m one of them and dont worry about me repopulating the earth with violent video gaming spawn, I’m a strict believer in pulling out & delivering facials.
Help control the human population, have your children spayed or neutered.
