09.15.09 SHOULD MURPHY’S CATCH HAVE BEEN A TD?
I’m not really sure where I stand on the NFL’s criteria for what makes a completed catch. I mean, if the guy has two feet inbounds and he has possession, that sounds like a catch to me. On the other hand, I understand that the way the rule is written now makes officiating the catch easier; the side judge doesn’t have to watch the guy’s feet and the ball at the same time. Which brings me to the “catch” by Raiders wideout Louis Murphy in the first half of last night’s game against the Chargers.
The league office issued a further clarification of its officials’ ruling on whether Murphy maintained possession of the ball. While Article 7 of the 2009 NFL Rule Book was applied in making the booth decision to reverse the touchdown, the NFL also is further citing its rule book for an explanation:
“Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 1 of the NFL Rule Book (page 51) states that ‘if a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact with an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball after he touches the ground, whether in the field of play or in the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete.”‘ via.
Like I said, Murphy’s effort in the video above looks like a catch, but I get it. I can’t help but feel for Murphy, who took that ball to the sideline, thinking it was his first career TD. It’s that secret human side of me that I don’t show to anyone, except orphans and some kinds of wildlife.

Forget about that, how about the pussy roughing the passer calls. I mean I know Cuntler and Brady have sensitive vaginas but jiminy crickets!
I’m a charger fan. That was a catch to the naked eye, but in the replay he didn’t come up with the ball. It doesn’t matter… in the end the raiders are still the raiders and would have found some other way to lose.
I don’t remember the league having to contort themselves sixteen different ways explaining how this was ruled a catch, but hey, I’m just a pissed-off Raiders fans who think that if you have control of the ball when both feet are in contact with the ground it’s a catch. If you’re in the end zone when this happens, it’s a touchdown. What happens afterwards is completely irrelevant.
This morning I would’ve called it a catch but after seeing the reply when I’m sober, they got it right according to the rule.
He put both feet down, while going to the ground unlike Holmes in the Superbowl who put both feet down, then went to the ground. Sucks for Murphy and the Raiders…would’ve been nice to see them get at least one win this season.
Just like that tuck horseshit, it’s a horribly defined rule that rears its ugly head just in time to fuck over the Raiders. When they say “after he touches the ground,” they don’t bother to define what specific part of him they are referring to (Two feet? An arm? A knee? A hip? His body?) and they don’t specify what they mean by “after.” A second after? Until the whistle is blown? Until he gets back up to his feet? Can the defender knock it away while he’s still on the ground?
It’s a stupid rule. 2 feet down with possession = catch.
Yeah, I think that’s a catch. Just like how it doesn’t matter if the ball is knocked out of your hand the instant after crossing the goal line. If I was a Raiders fan, I’d be pissed off about this. But I’m a Bears fan, so I’m pissed off about other things.
If that had happened on the edge of out-of-bounds, he wouldn’t have to take it all the way down and all the way back up w/ him.
It’s a stupid rule, but it’s a rule. I can think of worse rules. Like, the tuck rule for example, or the fact that you can’t hit QB’s too hard or below the waist or you get smacked with a 15 yard penalty and a monetary fine depending on how big a star the victimized QB is.
It’s horseshit, and the league office knows that it’s horseshit, otherwise they wouldn’t have to explain themselves.
What do you expect from officials wearing pumpkin colored shirts? Fuckin’ fashionistas!
