I try to follow soccer. I really do, but some of the player movement just doesn’t make any sense to me. Transfers, I can figure that out. It’s just a stupid word for “trades.” But the concept of loaning out players–quality players that have such a finite shelf life as it as–that just boggles my GD mind. So if any of you have any insight about this David Beckham going-to-AC-Milan-and-then-five-months-later-returning business, by all means, jump in. One fan tried to do just that in Beckham’s MLS return to LA last night:
At halftime, Beckham walked toward the L.A. Riot Squad section and motioned to a fan to come closer. A man jumped down from the seats and was subdued by security before being taken away.
“One of the guys was saying things that wasn’t very nice. It was stepping over the line,” Beckham said. “I said, `You need to calm down and come shake my hand,’ and he jumped over.”
The man was arrested by Cal State Dominguez Hills police for trespassing because he left the seating area, a Home Depot Center spokeswoman said. via.
So Beckham leaves LA to play in a league where he wanted to play all along (I presume), comes back to MLS to fulfill his contract, and then gets his ass booed off the entire game. Like I said, I don’t really get it. Obviously, the Galaxy faithful are a little bent that Beckham left. I’m just amazed that fans in LA were able to get to the game before halftime. That’s more commitment than Beckham seemed to show to LA.

Is that Billy Idol drinking a beer while wearing a glove in the picture? (right side of picture)
@ UU, LMFAO!!!
It’s pretty impressive how they were able to fit the entire MLS fan base into that one picture.
`You need to calm down and come shake my hand,’
Ah yes, the William Ligue defense!

More along the lines of International Play really. Look, MLS is quickly becoming a league in which young up-and-comers and aging Euro superstars come to shell out the last bit of energy and skill they have, hoping to maybe get a shot at being recognized overseas. In Beckham’s case, the move to Milan came down to having the opportunity to play top International Soccer with England, and with the squad that England has now, Beckham would never see international playing time playingwith the Galaxy. His move to AC Milan assured him a spot on the team, mainly because AC Milan is a team that, even at “old” age, can rejuvenate a player, and his international career.
Was that his only reason? No I don’t think so. I think the fact that he realized how much he missed a more fast-paced, competitve league like the Italian League or English League s something to do with it, and the fact that he is just realizing that soccer will never be big in America, at least not on the level he envisioned upon moving here. Of course, the overshadowing factor of his intial move to LA was for money, but what can you expect from a Galaxy fan? In the beginning he preached and preached and preached how excited he was to be here in the MLS and how he was going to change soccer here. His tune changed quickly and its embarrasing and hurtful to here someone change from ” i cant wait to change a whole countries mind set here about soccer” turned quickly to ” i want to go back to Europe, fucking NOW!”
