06.15.09 TIM SYLVIA GOT KNOCKED THE FUGGOW
Tim Sylvia, the former UFC heavyweight champion who was once considered one of the toughest fighters in the world (not many people choose a broken arm over tapping out), has been old and crappy for some time now, and he finally bottomed out this weekend at “Adrenaline III: Bragging Rights” in Birmingham this weekend, when he weigh in at a hefty 310 pounds and got knocked out less than 10 seconds into the first round. As you can see from the video, he’s clearly unconscious before he even hits the ground, which I haven’t seen since I drugged your mom’s drink. Not that I needed to. Because she’s easy.
In more important MMA news, UFC 99 was held on Saturday night, and for the most part it was a pretty entertaining card. The highlights:
- Mirko Cro Cop returned to UFC, beating tomato can Mustapha al-Turk, but the fight was marred by the TKO that was called when the referee missed an eye-poke by Cro Cop. And things only got worse when news broke that Cro Cop had leveraged this fight to draw more attention to his career before he flew the coop for DREAM. Or not (see link below)
- Dan Hardy won a close-fought split decision over Marcus Davis, likely helped by the fact that he shattered Davis’s nose, forcing the ref to halt the fight briefly to wipe away some of the blood pooling on Davis’s face. It was sickening. And awesome.
- And in the headliner, Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva fought at a catch weight of 195 pounds, and they simply beat the living jesus out of each other for fifteen minutes. What an awesome fight. As the bell for the third round rang, with both fighters dazed and exhausted, Franklin had gotten behind Silva, and they were still relentlessly attacking: Silva was throwing repeated elbows to Franklin’s head while Franklin was landing hooks to Silva’s face. Franklin took the decision, but the real winner was anyone who likes to watch dudes kick the crap out of each other.

Marcus Davis, not Bent.
When did Marcus Davis change his name to Bent?
aww, i just registered to say that…
Let me get this straight, it’s Marcus Davis, not Marcus Bent?
Correct, Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis.
…and I scored the fight for him…close bout.
Jesus, sorry. Gimme a break, I’m writing for three different sites today.
And this is why the name Marcus Bent got stuck in my head:

understandable Matt, he’s a formidable specimen.
confusing a black, english soccer player with a white, irish american mma fighter is complety understandable
oh hey, boobs!
I better get my two cents in here as the resident UFC hater. A post like this is quite pointless when you consider that UFC is still waiting to hear back if one of their fans can read.
What did boxing ever do to WL? As insane as MMA is, to me it will never compare to the “sweet science”. I watched Ali-Wepner the other night and was thoroughly amazed at the guts of Wepner and pure skill of Ali. Cotto-Clottey was a decent fight Sat. night, which I happen to think Clottey one. But hey, MSG the day before the Puerto Rican Day Parade, are they really gonna give the fight to a Ghanan (Ghanian?).
^won
The problem with boxing is simple. If I’m going to give a guy left, right combo with my fists, it seems ludacris that I can’t follow that up with a kick to the head. Then after I put him down with a head kick, punching him in the face until the refs knocks me off of him is a better ending than allowing the guy a chance to take a 10 count before I can go after him again. Just stupid.
On top of the fact that 12-15 rounds is waaaaaaaaaaay too long.
I’ll never deny a boxers talent but he’d be better off if he learned how to submit a guy on top of all that power in his fists. The “sweet science” isn’t the same as it was when Ali, Frazier and Forman dominated the sport, comparing MMA to classic Ali fights is not a fair comparison. Compare it to a Chad Dawson vs Antonio Tarver fight.
@ Chri534 – Not sure what fight you watched but Hardy shattering Davis’ face and successfully countering out of every Davis take gave him the decision. That “fake” Irish guy can go beat his wife and drink some whiskey if it helps cope witht the loss. An Irish -American’s are irish immigrant’s that are now american citizens…not guys that were born, raised, live and train in the US. My grandfater is from Scotland, I don’t go around calling myself Scottish.
Merk, Enrico, Dimpie…I know you guys have something for that now.
As for you still calling him a fake Irishman, he is 50% Irish. Do you think that had no influence on his upbringing? Did you ever think about the fact that he might just have pride for his family and their background? Your grandfather is from Scotland…you probably don’t know him that well and you could be, at best, 1/4 Scottish. It is completely different. I will go watch the fight again to make sure, but from where I was sitting I thought Davis had the decision.
Yup, just watched it again and still scored it for Davis. A little blood doesn’t mean shit. Please explain to me how you think Hardy deserved the win.
