BREAKING: NOBODY LIKES HOCKEY
06.01.09While the Red Wings seem to be scoring with ease against the Pittsburgh Penguins in this year’s Stanley Cup Final, the games themselves aren’t scoring many viewers. From the AP:
The NBC telecast [for Game 1 of the Final] drew a 2.6 rating and a 5 share. That’s compared with a four-game NBC average of a 3.2 rating and a 6 share one year ago.
Detroit has won convincingly in the two back-to-back games in Detroit, and suddenly the Pens are facing elimination at home unless they can win Game 3 in the Igloo on Tuesday. If a team falls in the playoffs and nobody’s around to watch it, does Sidney Crosby’s crying still make a sound? While you ponder that (or not), here’s the big fight (via Hockeyfights) that should have earned Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin a one-game suspension, as it happened in the last five minutes of play. At least when the NHL throws its rules out the window, it does so from the league’s front office, and not from the referee’s wallet at a Vegas sportsbook.

Of course this is getting bad ratings; two terrible cities in a championship series, not to mention everyone’s tired of Pittsburgh’s fly-by-night sports fans and listening to their loud, cock filled mouths.
With that mentioned, hockey is king.
Can someone glue a merkin to Crosyb’s face already???
Holy shit. What an insanely stupid comparison. I thought you were better than Ufford, Punte.
Last season, NBC had games 3, 4, 5, and 6. Ratings tend to go up for each game as a series progresses. So of course the average of games 3, 4, 5, and 6 is going to be higher than game 1.
And in that article they compare game 1 this season to game 3 last season.
If you want shitty comparisons, game 1 last season had 2.4M viewers. Game 1 this season had 4.5M.
Low ratings justify my low opinion of hockey! I feel so much better about myself!
oh my god, but then Kristin Cavelari shows up at the wedding!!! I mean, can you believe it?
Whoops… i might be in the wrong place.
/cheering for this final is like choosing between herpes or the clap.
Memo to Canada:
You can take your curling and your hockey and your hacky sack and stick ‘em where the sun don’t shine.
Jimmy, I love ya, but what part of:
The NBC telecast [for Game 1 of the Final] drew a 2.6 rating and a 5 share
did you miss?
Yea I saw it. So what about it? Saturday is the least viewed night of television. You should really be looking at that 5 share. 1 out of every 20 people watching TV that night were watching the game.
I can’t believe more people don’t to tune it to see Niklos Vakaclavaistan face off against Demetri Uskavanov!
Could be worse…could have Joe Buck doing the play by play. I’d rather fornicate myself with a splintered piece of balsa wood than listen to anything that dumber than a retard faggot has to say. Die soon Joe, very soon.
As a Canadian who gets constantly alienated by the NHL because of hockey’s answer to George W. Bush, it doesn’t surprise me. First of all, the playoffs should be over by now. Secondly, it’s hard to get into the playoffs as hockey progresses because of the long layovers and inconvenient times. It’s absolutely appalling that the NHL bends over backwards for NBC. Especially since CBC is paying the big bucks.
Punte: Detroit didn’t win convincingly both games. Pittsburgh has been snake bitten so far. They should have won last night, and arguably game one as well. Malkin won’t get suspended because it was the heat of the moment of a close game. That was more of a result of Malkin being pissed that Zetteberg shut him down for two games than anything. Plus Zetteberg hit Kunitz first.
Cool it BiggieLaing, and take five while you’re at it.
This sonofabuck only does play by play for Major Pro Sports. Sorry, but hockey is not a Major Pro Sport.
Max Steel is right regarding the suspension rule. You have to show deliberate intent to start a fight for a suspension to be given due to fighting in the last 5 minutes. If Malkin had been put on the ice for the sole purpose of throwing(missing) wild haymakers at Zetterberg, then a suspension would follow. Pretty tough to call that the case in this instance.
@Max – CBC, PJ Stock, the idesk, Al Straken, Kelly Hrudey and yes even that bitter old fuck, Don Cherry can kiss my ass. Wasting taxpayers money with brutal coverage.
Don’t take it personally, Joe. You just suck at broadcasting. I guess the “die” thing was pretty harsh but if you, John Madden, Bryant Gumble and Chris Collinsworth all happen to perish in a bus crash…I wouldn’t shed a tear. Again, not trying to pick a fight…you just suck, lol.
Way to turtle Smallie.
I’d invite you to see my trophy case full of Emmys, but I’m booked solid with $100K a gig speaking engagements.
I’d like to point out the reason for shitty ratings is becasue Pittsburgh has scored the same amount of goals as Justin Abdelkader, a 4th centre that only plays 7 minutes per game.
These are great points from everyone re the ratings and the Malkin incident.
Am I asking too much in waiting for Osgood to eventually shit the bed and get Pittsburgh back into this?
Sorry to say it Punte, this series was over before it started. You need a real playoff beard to win the cup finals.

@ Punte: Osgood is reminding me of what Tony Romo might be. He started off with a lot of potential, but then choked in the playoffs (see: The Wings/Sharks series with Osie as a Rookie). But since Mike Vernon got there in ’96, and showed Osgood how to win in ’97, Osgood has become a solid goalie. He’s won 2 cups as a starting goalie for Detroit, and made some shitty teams into a playoff team. Since his return, he’s just unflappable in Detroit. He’s just a solid, poised veteran. So, as much as I hate to say it, the answer is no. He won’t shit the bed, and he’ll win the Playoffs MVP.
@ Biggie Liang: It blows my mind that Ron McLean makes over half a million tax payer dollars. Jesus, you only see half his face because he’s too stupid to work a camera! He’s got the easiest job in the world too. Especially since Grapes has been censored. And yeah, PJ Stock fucking blows.
As someone watching it as a hockey fan, I think it’s in the league’s best interest for Pittsburgh to win. You need the face of the league to win a cup.
