In an odd charity ‘event’ in San Diego, PGA Tour player and awesomely named individual Briny Baird hit balls off the top of a 34-story building into the outfield at Petco Park. Baird hit 9-iron off a turf mat and found the center of the target (ugh, turf mats?!) sitting 268 yards from the tee, which makes sense after subtracting 34 clubs for the drop.

P.F. Chang’s sponsored the event, the proceeds going to the San Diego Navy/ Marine Corps Relief Society. Here’s how it worked. If Baird hit the center of the bull’s-eye with any of his 10 tries, Americans were to receive a free wrap (with entree order) and the society would gather $2,000. The inner ring meant $1,000 per ball, the outer ring $500 per ball.

Well, Baird hit into the center circle twice and scored on eight of his 10 shots, meaning he earned $17,500 for charity. The restaurant chain upped it to $25,000.

Briny Baird probably had more spectators at this event than he does in most of his galleries at PGA Tour events. I ordered Briny Baird off the menu at a concession stand at the Memorial a few years ago. Turns out that I was looking at the leaderboard. Yeah, this is why we don’t cover a lot of golf.
