Golf analyst David Feherty has apologized for these remarks in a piece he wrote for D Magazine in reference to the Gulf War:
“This passage was a metaphor meant to describe how American troops felt about our 43rd president,” Feherty said in a statement. “In retrospect, it was inappropriate and unacceptable, and has clearly insulted Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid, and for that, I apologize. As for our troops, they know I will continue to do as much as I can for them both at home and abroad.”
ASYLUM POLL: Did Feherty’s joke go too far?
CBS Sports and the PGA Tour also condemned Feherty’s remarks. Here’s where all the trouble started, quoting from the piece in question:
“Despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there’s a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death.”
Feherty is of Irish descent, and Irish people probably say stuff like this all the time. And obviously, the government here isn’t going to lock him up for running his mouth here (it’s not like he’s Muslim or anything). But he can certainly look forward to being audited by the IRS every year. Hopefully he won’t be driving through Dallas in a convertible anytime soon.

You shouldn’t have to apologize if it’s fucking hilarious
This passage was a metaphor meant to describe how American troops felt about our 43rd president,” Feherty said in a statement.
Wow! Joking about an act of high treason to broadly generalize the political views of all members of the military. Nice work, Feherty, you potato-eating, wife-beating, whiskey-swilling papist.
I’m curious to hear Ufford’s take on this.
That was hilarious… But seriously there are not Elevators in Pakistan.
Doesn’t Feherty realize it is/was only cool to joke about Bush and Cheney getting assassinated?
This story proves once again stupidity is non-partisan.
I don’t think he knows what a metaphor is.
This Just In: Someone actually cares about what a golf analyst has to say about anything other than Tiger Woods.
What does he mean, “our troops”? Does Sinn Fein have commandos in Fallujah?
Doesn’t Feherty realize it is/was only cool to joke about Bush and Cheney getting assassinated?
Yeah, because that happened all the time.
I remember all those media figures who joked about Bush and Cheney getting assassinated and how they weren’t fired either. Practically a day wouldn’t go by when Wolf Blitzer wasn’t spouting off about how much he wanted to strangle Tom DeLay.
@Otto, I was talking about people in general not just media figures. After all there was a movie about Bush being assassinated and the governor of Kentucky made a joke about Cheney assassinating Bush by accident on a hunting trip.
Like I said assassination jokes are stupid
potato-eating, wife-beating, whiskey-swilling papist.
Leave me out of this, prick!
Did you even see that film? It wasn’t some left-wing wish fulfillment, it was a story about what would happen if Bush were assassinated, and from a liberal perspective, it said things would only get much much worse.
And Gov. Bashear’s joke: “”When I mention that Democrats are problem solvers, I can think of only one Republican who can be a problem solver — that is Vice President Dick Cheney if he would just take George on a hunting trip.” Big deal. You know, if you shoot an old man in the face, you get to be made fun of.
Didn’t see it Otto, but a film about assassinating a real president seems fucked up. I also recall someone over at Air America also joking about Bush being assassinated and I also recall sometime last year someone over at Fox News making a joke about Obama being assassinated.
I know my original comment was a failed attempt at being funny, but like I said assassination jokes aren’t funny especially when you consider some people would like to see Bush or Obama dead.
And this concludes why I should never talk about politics.
This also isn’t the first time Feherty has popped off like this. In one of his Golf Magazine articles he talked about wanted to pull the plug on enemy POW’s that were being cared for at the US Military hospital in Iraq.
“Of the six patients here, two were insurgents, treated, I’m told, with all of the care and respect given to coalition forces. We weren’t allowed to see the wounded insurgents, which is just as well, as Harmon or I might have “accidentally” stepped on an oxygen hose.”
Feherty (who is now a US citizen, I believe) must have skipped the part about how the US tries to set an example when he was studying for his citizenship test.
Didn’t see it Otto, but a film about assassinating a real president seems fucked up.
The British apparently felt differently when they made it. Not sure I would give a shit if a U.S. filmmaker made a movie about Gordon Brown getting whacked.
Yeah I’m sure the troops want another war in another country. I’m sure they are pissed that those crazy liberals want to end the ones we have been in thus far: Look at all the great result.
