Insulin just got a whole lot sexier in the Windy City as the Chicago Bears managed to put together the winning bid for Denver’s Jay Cutler.

The Bears acquired:

  • Cutler
  • The Broncos’ fifth round pick (140th overall) in this year’s draft

The Broncos get:

  • quarterback Kyle Orton (no, seriously)
  • The Bears’ first-round pick (18th overall) in this year’s draft
  • The Bears’ third-round pick (84th overall) in this year’s draft
  • The Bears’ first-round pick in 2010

Orton finally seemed to get his act together to some degree last year, so it’s a bit surprising that the Bears would emerge as the team willing to pay the two first-round picks that the Broncos were seeking. That’s what Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher thought, but then all you’d need to surprise that guy is something shiny. From ESPN:

“I guess the Bears felt like we needed another quarterback, so they made a move,” Urlacher told the Chicago Tribune. “They gave up a lot. Cutler must be pretty good.”

“I guess we got better as a team,” Urlacher added, according to the newspaper. “You get a quarterback who is a Pro Bowl guy. But I will say this: I think Kyle Orton is a good quarterback. He’s a great teammate. I hope he does really well in Denver.”

It’s a bizarre ending to this year’s answer to the traditional “Will he or won’t he” melodrama that’s plagued earlier NFL offseasons. At least this ended with a bit of resolution…and in April. Just in time to start hating on baseball!
