OH YEAH, THIS GAME WAS REALLY LONG
03.13.09We had to get to the game between Syracuse and UConn in the Big East tournament last night. This game looked like Syracuse had won it, but when a last-second three was declared no good after video review, the game went to overtime. Six overtimes.
There were the numbers, from the 3 hours, 46 minutes it took to play the game that ended at 1:22 a.m., to the combined 244 points, 102 of which came after the regulation buzzer, to the eight players who fouled out, to the six who registered double-doubles.
And that wasn’t nearly all. Just ask Syracuse point guard Jonny Flynn, who had 34 points and 11 assists in a game-high 67 minutes, only 3 fewer than were played.
“I just wanted to get the game over with,” he said. “I was thinking, `Lord, just get this game over with. Whoever wins the game, let’s just get it over with.’ “
I don’t understand why a game becomes epic just because it was longer. But that standard, when applied to highways, sub sandwiches, and male genitalia, seems to work just fine. Oh, Syracuse won, by the way. What did they win? A chance to play West Virginia tonight in the semifinal round. And maybe the admiration of their peers. Which is nice, but you can’t buy stuff with it.

That admiration will burn a mighty fine couch in Morgantown tonight.
Last time I saw a game like that, the Generals almost beat the Globetrotters.
If Basketball were any more boring it’d be shown on Cinemax: After Dark.
Wow, 67 minutes. That’s a lot.
The NHL had three games which hit a mere 65 minutes then went to a shootout yesterday.
Go NCAA basketball?!?!!
Heck, I once saw a Yankees-Red Sox game last 7 1/2 hours, The teams combined for 15 pitchers, 27 pinch hitters, 9 pinch runners, and 13 defensive substitutions. What a 9 innings that was.
hey jim jones, are you talking about the same hockey in which guys play 5 minute shifts at a time? the same hockey with like 15 guys on the roster?
i wouldn’t know because no one watches hockey
It’s actually 45-second shifts unless on a powerplay, in which case it can last from 1 minute to the full 2 minutes.
And each team has 20 guys on a roster, though the back-up goal doesn’t usually play and the 4th line forwards might play as little as 3 minutes.
The real gem of last night’s game was after a Johnny Flynn drive in OT, announcer Sean McDonough momentarily freaked out and yelled about Johnny Flynn “exploding” to the basket well after the play was over.
Anyone? Anyone? Something d-o-o economics….voodoo economics…
6 OTs. 5 needless. Since when did it become a rule to always launch a NBA+ 3-pointer with 8 seconds left, over and over and over again?
