Len Downie Jr., was editor of THE Ohio State’s student newspaper, The Lantern, back in the early 1960s, when Woody Hayes prowled the Buckeye sideline on football Saturdays. Downie, who also spent time at The Washington Post, reminisced about the former coaching legend during a visit to his former school, presumably on a mission to score some of that sweet Columbus coed ass.

As sports editor for The Lantern, Downie got to know legendary football coach Woody Hayes, perhaps more intimately than he would have liked.

“If the team lost or tied, he would conduct an interview in the nude. He was an ugly guy so it would clear the locker room out pretty fast,” he said. Downie said one of his early mistakes in journalism was not reporting that Hayes instructed a player to take off his helmet and then proceeded to hit him in the head.

That’s an interesting pick-up strategy. “Hey, I saw Woody Hayes naked. Why don’t we head back to your place on Chittenden.” Old guys are the worst at this–how quickly we forget that all women want from a man is a sense of security. And cash. I guess the security’s optional, really.
