Somebody once made the point that if a city has more plentiful options for entertainment, said city becomes less of a “sports town.” That makes sense to me, but it still doesn’t explain how the Florida Marlins can’t get more than 600 people to watch them play. From USA Today’s Game On:
According to unofficial counts by the Miami Herald and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, fewer than 600 seats were occupied. Official attendance was announced at 11,211.
But the telling quote came from Marlins reliever Joe Nelson. He told the Sun-Sentinel that, as he left the field after the final out of the 5-3 Florida victory, he wanted to toss the game ball to a young fan.
“I actually had to look for one,” Nelson said.
This is the portion of the post where we would mention that people in Miami are too engorged in hot Latin sex and exotic drugs to get out to the ballpark. But seriously, you’d think with all the Cubans floating into Florida in bathtubs and homemade rafts that some of them would take time out of their immigration-dodging schedule to go see a game. Okay, maybe that comment wasn’t so serious.

Actually, this is the portion of the post where, as someone who lived in Miami for a little while, I point out that people in Miami are far too stupid to understand abstract concepts like “directions to the game”, “what day is it?” and “exchanging cash for goods or services other than cocaine or hand guns.”
“But seriously, you’d think with all the Cubans floating into Florida in bathtubs and homemade rafts that some of them would take time out of their immigration-dodging schedule to go see a game.”
In honor of their leader, Cubans tend to flock to the Castro District at night.
/it’s full of what???
nobody wants to go to a 1pm game on a weekday? in miami? in late august? wierd.
1,000,000 degrees? Stadium built for football and not baseball? Stadium in the middle of nowhere? A team with Hanley Ramirez and a bunch of people nobody ever heard of? Gee, Lt. Winslow – you might be on to something. Weird.
They were all to busy tailgating for the Dolphins opener. Chad Pennington!
Yeah, I get the weather and the location and all that, but 600 people? In one of the largest cities in America?
There are Class A games that sell out all season.
MMP – That is another common misconception. Miami isn’t one of the largest cities in America. In fact, it isn’t even the most populous city in Florida (that would be Jacksonville). Miami is only 45th in the country. Still – I agree more than 600 could show up.
During the Expos last year, a game was moved from a 4:15 start to 1:00 at the last minute to account for a Jewish holiday. Something like 415 showed up to that one.
Yeah, other entertainment options = less of a sports town. Just ask New York.
