03.14.08 BOB COSTAS KINDLY INVITED TO LICK MY BALLS
I've always been a fan of Bob Costas — the "smug" label he often gets never bothered me much because Costas seemed entitled to it; he came off as smart and with a wry sense of humor. I even encouraged a Chuck Norris-like "Bob Costas facts" by saying he had telekinetic powers.
Today, thanks to this article, that admiration has turned into something much more powerful: righteous anger and deep, burning hatred. Mmm, tastes better than admiration, too.
Costas… doesn't understand what compels so many nonjournalist sports fans to seek a forum for their opinions.

What bothers Costas… is Internet and talk radio commentary that "confuses simple mean-spiritedness and stupidity with edginess. Just because I can call someone a name doesn't mean I'm insightful or tough and edgy. It means I'm an idiot. It's just a high-tech place for idiots to do what they used to do on bar stools or in school yards, if they were school yard bullies, or on men's room walls in gas stations. That doesn't mean that anyone with half a brain should respect it."
Will Leitch of Deadspin already gave this the thoughtful, disappointed essay that should serve as the representative response from the blogosphere, but I'd like to step up and represent those of us that are mean-spirited and edgy. Because Costas no longer has a right to call anything stupid. He delivered his screed from a position of complete ignorance, using analogies that even the tired dinosaurs and laughingstocks of old media have, for the most part, gotten past.
And Bob: get your metaphors right, you diminutive dipshit. The idiots on barstools and school yard bullies are the ones still reading local columnists; we smart kids turned to blogs long ago. So take your respect and shove it up your ass; I'd rather get a comment from some loser in an Albuquerque basement.

Mike26, I didn't "post" to Deadspin; I linked to it because it's a thoughtful article that deserves the widest audience possible.
And Costas's thoughts, by and large, were against fans seeking out forums where they have a voice. So what the fuck is your problem?

All of this anti-blog backlash recently REEKS of fear…..I'm not saying Costas and those of his ilk think that bloggers are going to take his job, but rather that they realize that Will, Matt, Drew….and to a lesser extent you and I….are connecting with readers daily, which is something they cannot do. And they are threatened.

He speaks in half-truths. While I certainly do live for the comments sections on WithLeather and other fine sports blogs, the comments sections on places like ESPN.com are completely pointless and filled with the exact type of bickering and homer comments that Mr. Ufford goes out of his way to prevent on this glorious blog. At the same time, the whole "all bloggers blog from their parents' basement" line is downright pathetic. isn't there a dead horse he could go beat somewhere?
