MLS Cup final between the New England Revolution and the Houston Dynamo. This is partly because it started at noon Eastern, and huffing paint is better for your brain than watching NFL Countdown on ESPN. But it's also because I'm always curious about the state of American soccer.
There are plenty of people who will never like soccer, and that's cool — I have no more business telling you to like soccer than you have to tell me I shouldn't be hot for Helen Mirren. But the level of play in MLS is astoundingly better than it was a decade ago. It's obviously not the skill level you see in the World Cup or the Premiership, but it kinda looks like this American soccer league is here to stay. Sorry.
As for game details, Taylor Twellman — who will be on the national team soon enough — scored for the Revs on an impressive header in the 21st minute, and for a while it looked like New England would get its first title after falling short in the championship the previous two years. But the Dynamo came back in the second half, scoring an equalizer on a mess in front of the net and taking the lead on Dwayne de Rosario's header in the 74th minute. De Rosario was named the game's MVP, even though his corn rows look totally queer. Definitely a tough break for the New England fans. Who else are they supposed to root for these days?

Things are certainly bleak there in New England with this loss. I gladly watched this game over the first half of the Giants suckfest.
To Belichick, this will somehow look like a slight to the Patriots and will lay waste to the Texans. It will not matter that these two teams do not play against each other.
I would destroy Helen Mirren. And womever the old british chick is in Mission: Impossible.
I got to go to a few Toronto FC games this year. The team sucked, but the atmosphere was incredible. Teams like that can't help but cement the longevity of the league.
And don't more Americans play soccer than any other sport? There has to be a real chance that soccer will not only catch on, but become really big one day, once the next generation starts taking their kids to games.
It's 1836!
I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize "dynamo". Now Chico…Git with the lawn mowin! Ya-hooooo!
you paint a bleak picture, Gourmet Spud
What the hell is going on here?! Who the fuck are you and what the hell did you do to Matt?!?!?
Hate to admit it, Merk, but the crowd at the FC games was just as crazy as the Raps playoff crowds last year. They…are…coming.
I'd rather watch a Helen Mirren movie marathon on Lifetime that watch five minutes of any soccer game, but as to its future in the US I will say this: the games do appear on basic cable.
Your move, NHL.
Vanessa Redgrave, Nabs? Interesting choice.
I'd watch more soccer…or any soccer at all…if they didn't wear shirts. Or, if they had shorter shorts. Soccer players sure are fit…
I am totally in the minority, but I think Beckham did more harm than good in promoting
it's called football everywhere else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!soccer in the U.S. They made it a sideshow and I know, for me anyway, I was moderately interested in the sport got turned off by the circus. I'm just glad any team but the Galaxy won.I thought I saw a scene from a movie the other night where Helen Mirren was gettin it on with Rod Tidwell. Was it an outtake from Boat Trip? Or did I have too many stale peanuts?
I knew it was a Redgrave; just not sure which one. But yeah; I'd do her.
Shadowboxer, WDYA, not Boat Trip.
Hmmm…I know too much about Cuba's career.
Hanging out with a bunch of drunken Seattlites all throughout summer at Qwest Field? That 50 dollar deposit doesn't look bad at all, does it Matt. 2009 will be the year of the (Sounder?) here in Seattle.
Oh and btw,
Fuck Clay Bennett.
What language was that last paragraph in? I didn't understand a word of it.
What is it you say about this foozbawl???
Um…
Twellman's been on the US Team for years…
