Sean Taylor succumbed to the gunshot wound he suffered late Sunday night. He was 24.
It's hard to write something that sounds sincere on a website that is generally anything but that, but — as a fan — I was genuinely interested in what Taylor did on and off the field. For better and worse, he played with the utmost passion — from his punishing hits in the secondary to the spitting incident that marked him as a "bad guy." He was perhaps not the best safety in the game, but it's likely he was the most feared.
Of course, I can only distill from Taylor what I saw on the playing field. His life extended beyond the sidelines, and my heartfelt wishes go out to his girlfriend, his one-year-old daughter, and the Washington Redskins community.

He should have worn a cup
Just awful. I can't believe he was my age. Just incredibly sad and senseless.
He was measty until the end… lasting 24 hours longer than any normal human would after being shot in the femoral artery.
RIP Sean, you truly were a BAMF.
On an unrelated note, is the guy all the way to left really a referee? He seems a bit old. Attending a ref fantasy camp perhaps?
Guns aren't the answer. Unless you are fighting Bear. Grylls that is. Senseless violence, it's too bad there wasn't a better course of action taken by the police seeing as his home had been broken into numerous times in the weeks leading up to this event. Way to go 5-O.
This sucks, but you kinda had a day to prepare for this. I was hoping his meastyness would pull through but when you heard femoral artery I knew it was a matter of time.
Farewell man. My roommates' black Taylor jersey will be poignant from now on.
Great Taylor hit here
[www.youtube.com]
Also, bet on the Skins this weekend. They will maul the Bills in the name of Sean Taylor.
not to downplay the tragedy of young man losing his life, but it's too bad the real heroes in Iraq aren't met with same admiration when one of them goes down daily in that hell hole of a country
thats pretty fucked.
@ LordZnot:
You're a twat.
RIP Sean Taylor
Oh please, if he was a golfer, you would think it was funny
LordZnot…you obviously haven't learned the proper method to slipping poor taste jokes through without pissing people off. You have to follow with the "too soon?" it's like a get out of jail free card for tasteless humor
I know we are all sad people that an NFL player with a lot of promise has died, but keep in mind the fact that Taylor could have asked for this. Lets not forget about his gun toating ways before we make him out to be Christ. Don't get me wrong, I feel terrible that he left a girlfriend/wife and a baby girl to fend for themselves now, but he pulled a piece on a group of people. You simply cannot do that shit. What ever happend to settling our differences like men, with our fists?
My thoughts go out to Taylor's family, especially his little daughter. So sad.
Its a shame this happened to a man who was just turning himself around. The D.C. area news has been more about the man he had become since the birth of his daughter in comparison to the spitting, gun wielding kid he still was when he entered into the NFL. He was definately a tenacious son of a gun and I am glad I got the honor of seeing him knock out jamal lewis cold from the sidelines of last year's ravens scrimmage game.
on a gramatical note i've given up capitolization and spell checking in my mourning period
Nobody's making him out to be Christ…folks are just saying condolences…why couldn't it just be that….instead of "he COULD'VE asked for someone to break into his house and kill him".
RIP Sean.
I just hope he made his peace.
As much as everybody would hate it, I feel that no more posts should go up today. Maybe its just me, but I don't have the urge to make any potty jokes today.
I didn't say that bro, I'm just saying, this is what happens when you choose to live life like that. You cannot outrun your past son. My condolences go out to the family, but I will not pretend to feel a lot of sympathy. It's like wondering what happend when you fail a test but didn't study for it in the first place.
Hopefully Taylor's money goes to giving that kid a future.
Another young brother lost to violence…
rest in peace Mr. Taylor.
I wonder what kind of heartfelt, league wide tribute to #21 Goodell will prohibit.
I wonder how long this case stays on the desk of a Miami "Detective" before it's chalked up to another young black man dead and goes into the unsolved section.
I get what you're saying…and I agree to an extent. But it's not like he was out hanging at the local weed spot. He was in his house sleeping. I guess i was just saying there wasn't really a need for a reminder of him waving a gun on someone who he thought had stole something his ATV…RIP, and keep it moving.
@Merk
Most murder cases go unsolved if they are no leads or clues gathered in the first 48 hours. At least that's what I gathered by watching A&E's "The First 48".
Merk,
You think that file is still on a desk? Does the term "Cold Case" mean anything to you?
Merk…they will put the case file right in the "Must Solve" bin with Brian Prada's file
The NFL isn't getting any better an image from this..RIP Sean. God be with his daughter who is now without a father.
and by "must solve bin" I mean trash bin
@Merk
Not if David Caruso has anything to do about it.
I think Hugh B. Brown is on the case as we speak.
the police in South Florida suck. An ex-roommate of mine cleaned me out and I gave the police his name, cell phone, license plate, social security number and parents address and to this day (1.5 years later) they're still "having difficulties locating the suspect"
With all due respect, you people are idiots. Even if you believe that any detective (outside of LA) would use less diligence in investigating the murder of a black male than that of a white victim, do you honestly believe that would be the case with a high-profile one such as this?
One person is to blame for Taylor's death; the one who pulled the trigger. Unlike TV, homicides don't get solved in an hour. Give the good guys a few days before you make out every one of them to be Mark Fuhrman.
Luckily, there is a good list of suspects, like, all the people Taylor himself pointed a gun at when he accused a group of stealing from him. Think that it was a coincidence that his home was burgularized numerous times leading up to these events? They will find out who did this. At least I hope so.
true..I'm white and they still don't give a fuck
swany, that is weak ass shit. Don't give me that crap that you can't outrun your past. Taylor is still the baddest motherfucker in the League, and it's a damn shame that he went out because of some bitch with a grudge.
If you are going to try and justify a 24 year old's death, then maybe Joe Buck was right. Maybe you do just plain suck at With Leather commenting. We don't need a devil's advocate when it comes to this topic.
@Hugh B.
Didn't mean to offend.
I'll be honest. All i really know about Miami cops I've learned from a creepy ass red head on tv. Which I guess means that I should be well aware that with the help from a dumb ass blonde and the coroner who calls all the bodies "honey and sweetheart" this will get solved by morning.
then maybe Joe Buck was right
WHOA WHOA WHOA, hold on. I know it's a strange morning for everyone. Some people might not know how to react to this news, but let's not go saying things we're gonna regret later.
@ Enrico
Yea easy man, I wasn't trying to offend anyone either. I'm not trying to be devil's advocate man, I'm just saying, from what I've read about it, this shit seems to have been going on for the past couple weeks. I think it looks like an accident, like the person was trying to scare him. Nothing was stolen. He wasn't shot in the chest or face, but in the lower part of his body, the leg. This is a tragedy regardless of Taylor's past, ok. I feel terrible for him and his family because by the way things looked, he indeed did a lot of good things to turn his life into a more positive direction. But honestly, with regards to solving the case, I would say that his past provides the investigators with a lengthy list of suspects, people that probably had a grudge with his success. Or maybe you DIDNT read any of the articles around the web yesterday. But that is the impression I got, or IMO as they say. Again, wasn't trying to piss you off, I just feel that it's too bad that people still grow up thinking this is a way of life. and by people, I mean PEOPLE, not black people, or white people, or mexican people, just people.
Terrible thing to die so young. RIP S Dot Taylor
Deberg. you are correct. I should have used the too soon. I hate when I forget that.
The Jets still can't get a receiver past him. (much better?)
Does anyone really give a shit about him as a person.
This was a good football player that we lost.
This guy was a stupid fuck who constantly was in trouble with the law and would probably fuck all of your sisters if given the chance. This guy was a scumbag and obviously was being robbed twice for a reason.
I feel for the redskins because they lost their best defensive player, as a person, taylor was useless, so fuck him.
i agree with merk-merk. in the coming weeks i'm sure we'll find out what was behind the incidents and eventual shooting but i can almost guarantee this was not a random home invasion. the knife on the bed makes it sound gang related.
on another note, anyone know how much this will help the skins with their massive upcoming 2008 cap problems?
Thank you crap, sorry that sounded funny.
ANyways, noone here really gives a shit about his family. Maybe his daughter, because her scumbag father probably impregnated some random black chick when she was 16. But shes probably better off now because shell get any money he had.
On a sidenote, why the hell do black guys refuse to wear condoms. Every athlete who is black seems to have one, two, or nine illegitimate children.
Even the small college i went to, 6 of the 12 d1 basketball players had girls with liek 3 abortions each.
I just dont get it
The worst part about this incident is that it's going to encourage more rich athletes to arm themselves and their posses. Taylor heard a noise and grabbed a machete. If Tank Johnson had heard a noise the intruder would be deader than Jayson Williams limo driver.
Best to his girlfriend and daughter.
My boo-yahs go out to the family of that fallen warrior.
Why is there debate about how we should feel about his passing? Some think he was a good football player, so we should really feel bad for the loss. Some think he was a [insert your choice of word for undesireable person] and we shouldn't care so much, even suggesting he 'had it coming.'
Bottom line, it really doesn't matter. Death sucks.
Every one of us face the same horrid eventuality. You will be dead one day, too. What kind of legacy will you have? Funny, but socially retarded? Great at typing while jerking off? Awesome at dick jokes?
How does your legacy compare with that of Sean Taylor?
This is a sad ending to a story of a young man who made mistakes was was finally seeing the bigger picture after the birth of his daughter. With the current landscape of prosprts, I give the guy credit for even being involved in her young life.
I am left with 1 question though….
Who brings a machete to a gun fight?
well said bloof
Ya if i saw a guy i already know is one badass motherfucker coming at me with a machete, i would shot him in the leg too. He just happened to die from it which sucks for him.
Merk-Merk: The daugher was one…it was with his girlfriend. Hardly random and hardly sixteen. Chill with the idiocy….I'm sure no one thinks you are or was a scumbag….
I can't lie though…getting really tired of my brothas not strapping up…that kind of dough though, my vasectomy would be in full effect day after my contract was signed.
ok so i took a guess on the daughter/girlfriend thing. If you take my guess youre right about 95% of the time with these type of athletes
Karma's coming to that guy who shot him.
swany, OK, I've been a diehard Skins fan sicne I was born and have watched Taylor develop from a punk his rookie year into a model teammate that he was. It just sucks on every level possible. And yes, I've read about every possible article regarding the situation.
You've got to be a really big man to shoot a guy who's sleeping.
His death–like the thousands of other GSW-deaths each year–is a tragedy.
But he is not, and was not, a "warrior" (Joe Buck, I'm looking at you). He did not get shot defending his country, upholding the law, saving innocents, or furthering some noble cause.
He got shot during an apparent burglary. That's not heroism; that's simply bad luck.
It's sad when any 24 year-old life is snuffed out for no good reason, and this borders on tragic because from what I read, he was turning his spoiled sports-hero attitude around as a result of being the father of a young child (who is now fatherless). And not to play "which is the worse tragedy?" but let's face facts: offering condolences and lionizing this particular victim is fine, but where is the outrage and sympathy when it happens to someone out of the limelight, or when it happens to a true hero?
Bottom line: if he wasn't a millionaire pro football player, no one here would've even heard of the crime, nor would anyone here be offering condolences.
As an example: [www.sun-sentinel.com]
23 year-old man killed just a day before Taylor was shot. Where are his condolences?
Legacy? Warrior? Come on; he was a human being. His death is tragic enough without the parade of hyperbolic aggrandizement that elevates it to something worse than the dozens of other such deaths that happen every day.
On a similar note, have any pretty young white girls gone missing lately?
NOTE TO SELF: Lothar of the Hill People is an insightful person with his head on straight. Don't fuck with him.
It certainly is a tragic waste whenever anyone this young and with this much talent dies, but on the other hand, I have to agree that this is not exactly a shocking case.
I mean, c'mon, if someone had asked for a list of the NFL players most likely to die in a shooting, Sean Taylor would have been right at or near the top of the list. Maybe this shooting had nothing to do with the thug life, but either way, it's about as surprising a headline as "Dale Earnhardt, Sr. dies in race car crash." You shake your head at the waste, but then shrug your shoulders and say, "Well, it's not like we didn't see this one coming . . . "
Lothar – you have a point – you are dead on. But that doesn't mean someone can't say RIP or "Thats Tragic" or "My condolensces". People give condolences because in a way…they knew Sean Taylor…at least knew of him…watched him…however small it's a much bigger connection than to someone you don't personally know…and never seen. If something was to happen to you and it was reported on this blog…most people here would send their condolensces…just because they had some sort of contact with you even if it was only through A-ROD Transvestite and Brady Quinn dick grab jokes.
And come on..people call him a warrior "ON THE FIELD" it's just a friggin' metaphor it's not that serious…I'm sure you've used exaggeration or a metaphor to describe something before.
Hey Loather, go back to your Hill People Hippie Commune and lecture them after the sunset round of hacky sack and bong hits. The last thing this 6 time Emmy winner needs is advice from some amateur hack.
It's so damn creepy but everything Joe Buck writes, I hear in the real Joe Buck's voice.
Merk-Merk: I've never enjoyed your comments before–mainly because they're all antagonistic and unfunny attacks on Merk Version 1.0–but now that you've exposed the extent to which your racism, stupidity, and insensitivity exist, I imagine no one that consistently reads WL will ever respect you again. Well, maybe the pirates.
sweetness you probably like cock and are missing the whole point of my name and posts. So go eat some man-ass
