I don't know if you remember this, but Michigan lost to Appalachian State the first week of the college football season this year. It was a pretty big deal because the Wolverines were the highest-ranked team ever to lose to a Division I-AA opponent. I'm sure there were a lot of people in East Lansing happy that day to see their in-state rival fall so low. Well, Michigan State's basketball team lost to Grand Valley State 85-82 in double overtime last night. What's that? You've never heard of GVSU? That's probably because you've never been to the G to the muthafuckin' Rap (Grand Rapids, MI). You probably also never heard of it because the Lakers are a Division II school. Did I mention that Michigan State is ranked #8 in the pre-season AP Top 25 poll and expected to win the Big Ten this season? Two things I will never say again: "Those poll makers know sure know their business!" and "The Big Ten looks strong this year!"
Astute readers will remember that I encouraged you to begin referring to MSU's football squad as the "Achaeans" after their loss to mighty Northwestern a month ago. That recommendation now applies to all their athletic teams, unless you live in Flint and don't want to get shot. Well, shot for a reason. -KD

I happen to attend MSU. "The Big Ten looks strong this year!" are words you should never say in the first place. Regardless of sport, we start beating on each other as soon as conference play begins. We're awful at the national level as a conference.
Also, did you notice we were fielding mostly freshmen last night?
Sigh. As an alumnus, I must say this is one of the more depressing weekends to be a fan of the mighty Achaeans.
True story: When I was at Moo U, many moons ago, some instructor wrote a letter to the Stale News decrying the nickname "Spartans". He claimed they were militaristic, reactionary, blah blah blah, and suggested that the name should be changed to "The Athenians", as that would be more appropriate to the values of a major University.
He was clearly not an instructor in the History department.
This series, recently, has been close. It's a glorified scrimmage.
2006: MSU 61, GVSU 57 (MSU ends up losing to UNC in NCAA Tournament Second Round)
2004: MSU 77, GVSU 62 (MSU ends up losing to UNC in NCAA Final Four)
Losing to GVSU means nothing. Literally. The Spartans are still 0-0.
It may not show up in the L column, but it is still absolutely embarrassing. Even the highly touted group of freshmen that Izzo brings it every year still shouldn't lose to a DII squad.
As a North Carolinian/Tar Heels fan, and a GVSU alumnus, I'd like to thank Spartans basketball for being pretty much the most overrated squad year in, year out since Dook, and maybe the Yankees. It used to just be fun in the tournament, now it's fun in November!
Maybe Sparty should've thought twice before running up on Louie, who beat 'em down on some Popeye-with-the-spinach shit.
And after catching the Wofford Herpes, I don't think MSU wants it with the most-consecutive-victories-record-setting Lakers on the gridiron either.
Spartans are not overrated… They continue to drill rated teams…. You need to follow them more closely as they climb to the pinnacle of Success in the Big Ten and NCAA this year… Maybe with a little Spartan Side Boob action…8- 1 With a Game with Texas in a neutral Site.. .Go Green!!
