The assistant editor spared me the trouble of writing about Cardinals pitcher Josh Carpenter's [oops] Hancock's death by posting about it on Sunday, but it looks like new details are forcing my hand here. Over the last 24 hours, the following details have surfaced:
• Two days earlier, Hancock had been in another accident at 5:30 a.m., just five hours before he was supposed to be at the ballpark for a noon game. A tractor trailer going between 45 and 50 mph ripped off his front bumper when he edged into oncoming traffic preparing to make a left-hand turn.
• Witnesses to one of Hancock's final conversations — with ESPN's Dave Campbell — say that Hancock missed the start of that Thursday game because he had been drinking. Manager Tony LaRussa, himself arrested for DUI before the season, allegedly fined him $500 and was angry he was "too hung over to play."
• Those same witnesses claim Hancock was severely intoxicated the night of his death, one of them noting "He [could] barely put a sentence together." When Hancock left around 12:30, the bar/restaurant's manager offered to call him a cab. He declined.
Obviously, there's a lot that can be insinuated here, and anyone with a sixth-grade education could do anything from lambaste the Cardinals' organization to decry Hancock's seeming disregard for his fellow man by driving drunk. It's not really something I want to tackle, though. Thankfully, The Dugout knows how to write about Hancock's untimely death properly: with wisdom, perspective, and a touch of humor. It's the only must-read I've seen on the subject.

Holy Crap – carpenter died too?!?
It seemed weird to me that he hit a tow truck parked in the left lane of a major highway. I would hope that there would be cones and/or lights on the tow truck so drivers would have adequate time to avoid the stopped truck and whatever car it was towing. Also, where is the owner/driver of the towed car during all this? And, usually a tow truck is IN FRONT of the car it is towing, correct? So where was the towed car? Was it already on the bed of the truck? And where the hell was I?
The only reason a white person should ever be on Route 3 in Sauget, IL at 5:30 in the morning is if they’re going home from one the area’s many gentlemen’s clubs. Say what you will about Mr. Hancock but I’m going to celebrate his legacy as a titty connoisseur.
The Dugout should win Puliter Prizes for their writings on dead pitchers (Hancock, Lidle, Randy Johnson’s carrer, etc.)
So what if it was confirmed he killed himself driving drunk the day everyone found out? Still cancel the game and offer a tribute, or kind of figure out a way around it?
Agree with Chris – I don’t usually find the dugout very entertaining, but they knock it out of the park in situations like this. This one and the Lidle one (even better) both brought a tear to my eye when I read them. Incredibly simple, but they manage to say it better than any sportswriter who writes an article about it.
Another agreement with Chris. The Dugout nailed this one.
It would be very easy to hit a parked tow truck where the accident happened. If you were drunk and passing out while you drove. It’s a damn shame when he could have easily slept at 3 or 4 hotels downtown all within easy walking distance of Mike Shannon’s. Matt, FYI, Shannon’s moved 1 block south, towards the new stadium, from it’s old location (now a Hooters and 1 block from my office hoo hoo). This is just one of those dumb deaths. I feel bad for his family.
Larussa is a paid and appointed leader. With his DUI it seems we might see a pattern.
Sad.
Dugout…thanks for that…I thought it would be too soon…it wasn’t.
Oh and I’m an STL kid.
Stay strong Cardinal Nation.
