Sorry, kids — no Japanese model pictures this morning. Daisuke Matsuzaka made his Fenway debut last night against fellow Japanese stars Ichiro and Kenji Johjima, but Dice-K's not the story today. Blame the Mariners' Felix Hernandez, who threw seven innings of no-hit ball and finished with a one-hit shutout in an absolute fucking domination of one of the most potent lineups in Major League Baseball.
Seriously: Daisuke Matsuzaka is a very good pitcher, but King Felix has a better fastball, better breaking pitches (devastating curve AND slider), greater differentiation in pitch velocity, and he's five years younger and costs the Mariners 1/40th what the Red Sox pay Dice-K. Stand up and take notice, because one out of every five Mariners games will be worth watching this year. Which, to be fair, is up from an aggregate of zero over the last two years.
Other baseball news: there IS no other baseball news today.

the mari-ners?
yessir!
Funny…. withleather failed to mention the prior day’s game where the mariners were beaten like a rented mule.
Unrelated: saw SI printed your letter to the Editor. right below Facebook’s Corporate Communications Director’s letter. that’s respect if I ever saw it.
Chief, it’s all of four posts down the page…

Lede: “The Red Sox really have a flair for pageantry. Not only did they beat the tar out of the snow-rusted Mariners at their home opener…”
I win. As always.
First Dice K loses and now this? Has your hubris for Seattles win impeded your love of tasteless exploitation of women? Jesus, I thought this sight had standards, and by standards I mean no standards. Get your head in the game Ufford.
Seattle agrees with Eric Cartman – having Mexicans around kicks ass!
Better breaking stuff? Laff, his fastaball may be better, but no no way does King Felix’s breaking stuff touch any of Dice K’s especially his change.
To be fair – and I am from Boston and was rooting for King Felix after about the 6th inning to get the no-no but let’s not go renaming the Cy Young yet.
We’re talking about a guy who was 12-14 with a 4.52 ERA last season. Yes last night was awesome, and yes his first game was great, and yes he has all the potential to be fantastic…but it’s Game 5 of the season for the Mariners so lets slow down a bit.
I thought there was an ominous shadow around here today, must be cast from your F-Her hard on.
I was wearing my King Felix jersey last night while watching the game nearing bursting with joy. What’s funny, if Felix was pitching against any other team besides Red Sox or Yankees, no one would care (Thanks East coast biased ESPN!). Dice-K is good, but Felix was better. I think I’ll go watch Felix pitch on Tuesday vs Min. Mmmm, greatness…
Where’s the Japanese chick with the ridiculous tatas? Same place as my motivation for reading a baseball post?
Matt, Im happy for you. You Mariner fans haven’t had much to cheer about lately, but this guy looks like the real deal. Second best stuff in the AL. And if you’re second behind Santana, thats pretty good.
Felix was indeed untouchable last night…now, BRING ON WASHBURN!!!!
16 words out of a 293 word post a recap does not make. let’s not play pretend here. that’s reserved for the M’s playoff chances and for Peter King’s inflated sense of self importance.
Whenever King Felix pitches a good game, you should post a pic of some hot Puerto Rican chicks. You know, to counter balance the hot asian ass seen when Dice-K pitches
“16 words out of a 293 word post a recap does not make.”
Psy-cho. Time for me to move again.
microsoft word has wordcount. sheesh.
Ok people. I have been trying to brush up on all of your wonderfull sports (except for hockey. I fucking hate hockey.) and I can no longer be very surprised when someone writes anything about either the NFL or the NBA. I get it. Pacman Jones gets a nice year off alone with his thoughts (and all of his one dollar bills) and uhm…Dirk Nowitzki is really…uhm…tall. I know that much. But when someone writes a certain Felix was 12-14 with a 4.52 ERA last season, I lose it. 12 of 14 out of what? What, in all that is holy, is an ERA? And why does the number that represtents it require two digits behind the comma, but does it never go above 5 (I think)?
Congratulations on the win, though, I guess. And good luck in the Play offs?
I honestly can’t for the life of me figure out if that last post was satirical or not.
“and for Peter King’s inflated sense of self importance. ”
Lovely. Absolutely lovely. :o)
Not necessarily. I know baseball season just began, but if the Mariners have someone who can throw for an entire game and only give up one hit (which I think he did), for all I know they must be pretty good. But that may not have been what you were referring to, I’m not sure. But considering the fact that I live halfway around the world and as such, don’t know anything about baseball, my English is far from coherent and, considering time difference, really should be sleeping, I hope it came across as an honest question as to what an ERA really is?
Jeop –
Honest answer: 12-14 is his record last year (how you score a pitcher’s win-loss record), 12 wins, 14 losses. His ERA, is the average number of earned runs he gives up in 9 innings (number of Earned Runs he’s given up Divided by the number of innings pitched. Multiply that number by 9). Anything under a 4 is good, anything under a 3 is amazing, anything 2 or under is very, very good.
