On March 2nd, Maple Leaf Tomas Kaberle got a concussion on late hit from the Devils' Cam Janssen, which earned Janssen a three-day suspension.
Last night the teams played again for the first time since the dirty hit, and Janssen was immediately called out by Leaves (I refuse to write "Leafs" — stupid Canadia) enforcer Wade Belak. Belak got revenge for Kaberle by… um… holding onto Janssen's sweater and skating around in a circle for 90 seconds before falling to his knees. Take that, Janssen!
The good news for the Leaves is that in hockey revenge, it's the thought that counts. Also, for those who care, Toronto won the game 2-1.

Janssen was swatting flies there for a while. Matt I think age and location wise you just missed out on Tony Twist, Kelly Chase (one of the nicest guys in hockey), Murray Barron and Bobby Bassen. One of the sweetest fights I ever saw on the ice was between the Blues and the Red Wings back in the late 80s maybe early 90s where Probert goes after Bobby Bassen who’s like 5’8 -10″ and Murray Barron and Dave Laury? (name escapes me right now) go after Proby, knock him down the the ice Bassen’s on top of Proby wailing on his face and the benches clear and there’s mayhem for a good 12 minutes before they get both teams off the ice. I think it was the first goalie fight I ever saw as well.
I never thought I’d say this, but you have to respect Cam Janssen; he answered the Code.
For those that don’t know, there is an unwritten rule in hockey that if you do something like what Janssen did to Kaberle (or Tootoo on Modano), you have to allow yourself to be challenged for it.
Janssen, a tough guy but not much of a fighter did well to know what was coming, take it like a man and answer the bell.
Good for him. Now the bad hit he put on Kaberle is over. Issue resolved. Probably unlike Tootoo.

Enforcers are enforcers, but this guy has about as much skill in hockey as he has thought in his head. Cam Janssen is a HORRIBLE hockey player. He can’t pass, can’t shoot, can’t defend. All he can do is take cheap shots – CHEAP SHOTS – not clean, hard, bone-jarring checks – he waits for guys to turn away, he waits for plays to be over, for the puck to leave the zone, THEN hits a guy. He’s an asshole. I have friends who are ardent Devils fans who think he should be dropped – preferably out of a 747.
Can’t we just put Janssen, Ruutu, Simon and Brashear in a cage and let them beat the crap out of each other? Hell, throw a bear in there just to keep it entertaining and I’d be fine with it – though I’d be rooting for the bear the entire time.
Ruutu can actually play. He goes second in shootouts for the Pens (and often uses the Forsberg olympic move). Say what you will about questionable hits but he’s got some skill.
Pure thugs are a dying breed. Janssen can skate and hits everything, and that’s why he’s in the league. Probably not for very long, but the days of pure goons that couldn’t even skate are dwindling.
The commentary in that clip had to be the most biased thing I’ve ever heard. Matt, I love your site, but do your viewers a favour and put up the video from TSN (Canada’s version of EPSN). It’s on YouTube, and it has two guys (Joe Bowen and Harry Neale) actually talking about the fight in fair terms, not two guys talking about what a “hero” Cam Jassen is for the entire bout. Well Dick (how appropriate), Cam Janssen is American (born in St. Louis), so I guess you’ll have to ask him youself. But he ate a lot of fist last night, so I guess that’s already been answered.
Well, with the shoulder pads and the fact you’re on skate over ice, doing underhook or anything fancy is quite difficult ( try it, you’ll see ). That’s the reason why hockey “fights” look more like 2 guys tugging each other jerseys then boxing. You can’t throw a fist unless you are steady, or you’ll comically fall.
