Over the last week or so, I've ignored about a dozen different takes on Lance Briggs's ongoing bitchiness towards the Bears, because to me it seemed like just the usual boring offseason rigamarole of player movement in the NFL. But I was wrong: Lance Briggs is a colossal, possibly historic, dickhead.
"I am now prepared to sit out the year if the Bears don't trade me or release me," Briggs told FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer. "I've played my last snap for them. I'll never play another down for Chicago again." Briggs elaborated that he would go so far as to take out loans if necessary to survive next year without a paycheck…
Combative, Briggs added in a brief conversation on the phone that he didn't appreciate Chicago fans and media reacting negatively when he made public his stance last week. He says he was tricked into doing an interview on WSCR-AM 670 and resisted speaking to local reporters because of the way he has been portrayed…
"I eventually want to be 'the man' somewhere," Briggs said. "I want to be like [Brian Urlacher] and have everything put on me too. Obviously, I'll never be able to do that there. Still, had the Bears made me a long-term offer that I found acceptable, I probably would have sacrificed this desire and stayed."
Stupid cheap Bears and parasitic media. You don't insult your players by offering them seven-year contracts that pay almost $7 5 million a year. And when the player (smartly) rejects that insult, you don't pour salt in the wound by making him the franchise player and guaranteeing him $7.2 million. Here's Lance Briggs, humbly approaching the team, bleeding from his stigmata, and the best the Bears can do is $7.2 million to play for the NFC champions.
I tell you what, I'd walk away, too. Then I'd ride ride my pegasus over to the valet station, where a team of leprechauns would retrieve my time-traveling DeLorean. "Here you go, Paddy. I hope this doubloon I got while scuba-diving Atlantis will suffice as a tip."

All right, Im with you to a point. Briggs is acting like a humungous asswipe. Saying he was “tricked” into an interview is an absolutel lie; I listened to said interview, and he was very aware he was on the air. And as a Bears fan, Im sick of the organization being labeled as “cheap” just because they dont just hand over money hand over fist (the Lovie negotiation being a prime example). But in this case, Im not sure I TOTALLY agree. First, the reported contract offer from the Bears was 7-years, 33 million, not “7 million a year). So that would be really underpaying a player of Briggs’ talent. Second, if I were Briggs, I’d be trying to get as much money as possible. What many fans dont realize is the NFL isnt like baseball or the NBA; just because you sign a 5-year, 40 million dollar deal doesnt mean youre gonna get that money. None of that is guaranteed. So you can say “Just take the franchise tag and the 7 million”, but if he blows out his knee this year, he’s done. Also, what isnt being mentioned……the Bears can franchise him AGAIN NEXT YEAR. So he might have to prove himself twice more. Yes, he’s acting like an asswipe, but I dont blame him for trying to get every dollar he can. He’s just going about it the wrong way.
It’s just a business decision on the part of da bears and a poor decision by Mr. Dickhead to go public. What do you mean tricked? I tricked my little brother into eating dog food. Are you saying that I could trick Lance Briggs into eating dog food? ’cause that would be epic.
i dont normally do this..but matt..that was fucking hilarious!!
This is how I like to trick my cat: [i64.photobucket.com]
I hope Briggs doesn’t play for the Bears ever again. You think the fans at Soldier Field are just going to take him back after talking all this shit?
Bears should trade him to the Cardinals. Can’t think of a bigger FU
Not mention he’s got the financial skills of your typical lottery winner if he’s got to “take out loans to survive.”
Ted Valentine – Yeah, but remember, he didn’t have $50K a few years back to buy land from his aunt.
What do you expect from someone who went to school at Arizona?
In the original article he mentioned he could “take out loans” to survive for a year. I’m sorry, but you can make 5 million a year and still live paycheck to paycheck. WTF!!?!!
