See, hockey, this is what I'm talking about. Last night's NHL action included a league-record eight (!) games going into overtime, which is enough for even me to sit up and take notice.
The biggest of those eight games was Buffalo's 6-5 barnburner win over Ottawa. Both teams surrendered two-goal leads before the deciding shootout, but more importantly, there was an all-out melee early in the second period after Sabres captain Chris Drury took a vicious blindside hit. That's right, all 12 players on the ice dropped their gloves, including the goalies. Ottawa's Ray Emery liked it so much, he took on Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters after knocking down his outmatched fellow goaltender.

I’ve been watching this highlight since I got into work this morning.
Hotness WL, Hotness.
Great clip. Emery is a fucking badass.
Ufford mentioned on that last hockey fight, but I love the way the announcers immediately switch from hockey to fighting commentary. “Emery gets in a right when Peters misses with a
Ahhhh the playoff are coming!
Andrew Peters rules, Martin Biron, the fellow goaltender just slid ( didn’t seem knocked out to me ).
and my Habs won the same night, sweet.
Man, that shot that Drury took was vicious, especially since he got knocked in to another check.
I have not seen that clip in a long time but I always thought Jacques Demers ended up throwing Bob Proberts helmet at the coach.
Everyone’s love for hockey brawls makes the NBA very confused.

my take has always been that hockey fighting is honorable because there is a niche for it in the game … its literally written into the rule book with prescribed fighting penalties. Additionally, in the modern era, the refs are right there to break it up once it goes to the ground so that noone gets hurts and it is always a one on one encounter. also, the physical act of “throwing down the gloves” allow each participant to willingly signal their intent and have a fair start.
in basketball, there are cheap shots, people punching and running, and brawl like three on 2′s, one on ones, etc.
not perfect, by thats my take.
Melrose called the senators a bunch of cowards for letting their goalie fight a non goalie.
What is this hockey that you speak of?
The best part was the first face-off after the hit, the Sabres put out their fighting line and the Senators put out their skill line. And the Senators coach got pissed about it.
The coaches jawing at it was one of the better parts. Clearly there were some profanities that made it into the mikes. Lindy Ruff could cut a motherfucker.
“and my Habs”
You are a good person, montrealais. Lets hope the guys can get on a roll and make the playoffs.
That shot Drury took wasn’t that vicious. It wasn’t all elbow. One of the first things you learn in hockey is to not cut in the middle of the ice. . . especially if you’re admiring your pass (also a big no-no).
Anyway, Linday Ruff better get his ass suspended for a crap load of games for over-reacting, and sending his enforcers to take out the Sens stars. That could have been a Bertuzzi/Moore incident.
Oh, I almost forgot. . .
“Melrose called the senators a bunch of cowards for letting their goalie fight a non goalie”
Melrose is a retard. Ray Emery is probably the toughest guy in the Senators dressing room. He trains as a boxer (and even had Mike Tyson painted on his mask before the NHL made him remove it) in the off-season. He was also the biggest Senator on the ice at the time. It’s almost his duty to fight Peeters, as Ottawa can’t afford having Heatley or Spezza getting hurt fighting Peeters.
Don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this yet, but Ray Emery’s Wikipedia page now reads, “[Emery] literally fucked up Sabres goalie Martin Biron as both goalies left their creases and fought each other. After that was broken up, Emery then fucked up Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters.”

Hockey guys fight like real men not punch and run like the NBA. The NHL’s real problem is that they want to take the fighting out of the game, because the fans don’t like it – hence, that is why all the fans were cheering like crazy when the gloves dropped, and Bettman would know what he’s talking about because look at what he’s done for the game! Emery is a better fighter than he is a goalie…
If WL wanted to post real hockey links, they would quit linking to ESPN for hockey and use a Canadian website like sportsnet.ca or tsn.ca…
The hit on Drury was clean – all shoulder, no elbow. He needs to learn to skate with his head up. The damage came when he bounced his head off the ice.
And I like that comment about “letting” Emery fight. Anyone who knows anything about hockey knows that Emery is a fighter and always has been, especially back in his AHL days. All you had to do was look at the grin on his face to know he was loving it. And I’m fairly certain that was a “you sure about this?” that he said to Biron just before they fought. Emery is a tough dude.
What is with Lindy Ruff? How come the only time I hear his name is when he’s screaming about something?
